We explored how people used to measure time using sundials, how the position of the sun affects the position of the shadow on a sundial, and whether sundials are accurate.

Mathematics plays an important role in cooking, especially through proportion, because the taste, texture, and quality of a dish depend on the correct ratio of ingredients. Proportion helps us determine exactly how much of each ingredient to use during cooking so that the dish is neither too dry nor too liquid, neither bland nor too flavorful. That is why maintaining proportion is especially important in traditional cuisine, where recipes are passed down from generation to generation.

Georgian traditional dishes clearly demonstrate how important the right balance of ingredients is. Georgian cuisine is distinguished by its diverse flavors, dough dishes, and carefully selected ingredients. One of the most famous Georgian dishes is khinkali. Khinkali is made from dough and meat filling, and its preparation requires precision and experience. The dough should be elastic and thin, and the filling should be a mixture of meat, onions, spices, and water or broth in the right proportions to make khinkali juicy and delicious. It is precisely maintaining proportions that ensures that khinkali is as Georgian tradition requires.

Rhythm is one of the most fundamental elements of music and has a mathematical structure. The rhythmic structure of a piece of music consists of sounds arranged within specific time intervals. This is parallel to the process of accurately calculating a mathematical sequence or time intervals. Timing and ratios, which require mathematical thinking, are the fundamental components that make up rhythm. Rhythm can be an effective tool for teaching mathematical concepts, especially at the primary school level. Creating rhythmic patterns with students using the durations of different notes can help them understand basic mathematical concepts such as fractions and ratios. For example, showing that each quarter note in a 4/4 time signature is equal to one-quarter of a whole measure makes the concept of fractions concrete. We carried out this activity with my students for this purpose.

Symmetry is not only in nature — we use this “secret code” every day without even thinking about it. For example, when we look in a mirror, we see a symmetrical reflection of ourselves. Our faces are mostly balanced on both sides, which is why symmetry is often connected to beauty. In buildings and bridges, architects use symmetry to make structures strong and stable. Many famous places, like the Taj Mahal, are designed with perfect symmetry to create harmony and balance. We also see symmetry in logos and symbols. For example, the Mercedes-Benz logo uses balanced design to look clean and powerful. Even in sports, our bodies move in symmetrical ways — when we walk or run, both sides of our body work together in balance. Symmetry helps us stay stable, create beauty, and build safely. It truly is a secret code hidden in our everyday life.

Zura Kagashvili
