An average of 5,240 American Teenagers commit suicide each day. More teenagers are dying from suicide and self harm than young adults die from AIDS, Cancer, Strokes, Heart disease, flu, pneumonia, Lung disease, and birth defects. Teen suicide is a problem that needs to be identified and fixed immediately. (Asher, 182) The main Character in the novel,Hannah Baker, committed suicide and the story follows a boy who fell in love with her and how her decision changed his life as well as her family and friends. Especially after Clay found the tapes she left with the 13 reasons why she killed her herself and that he was one of the reasons. ( Asher, 98) This novel values loyalty and you can tell that from the beginning. Hannah Baker was betrayed by people she trusted and she shows the audience how it tore her apart and how she took her life because of it. " I've heard so many stories I don't know which one is the most popular. But I do know which one is the least popular. The truth." (Asher, 63) In the novel, Hannah Baker was bullied, taken advantage of and ridiculed and it ended up contributing and being the main reasons that she commuted suicide. This really impacted me and made me realize that you never know what someone has been through or what they are going through and they deserve someone to treat them kindly and respect them because you never know what's going on in their head. It's showed me that kindness can make a huge difference in someone's life just by talking to them and giving them a compliment or being their friend and that it will impact them in huge ways that I cannot even understand. The author, Jay Asher, has done a great job affecting the audience who has read this book and it has really impacted me and made me think about how you should treat someone.
