I think that the 1st person perspective in the story allows the reader to really "get into the shoes" of the Shepard, and I don't think that any other point of view would have served the same purpose as effectively. the point is the isolation and outside perspective on the atom bomb, and you can only really get that through the first person perspective of the Shepard. It comes with the confusion and lack of understanding as well as just the raw fear.
