Motivations

Mary Warren has no clear motivations, rather her actions are based on a balance between her want of justice and her fear of Abigail. She wants the be able to tell the truth that she does not know the witch. On the other hand if she does not follow Abigail she could easily be convicted of being a witch through the word of Abigail. This makes Mary a character that is easily manipulated by both sides causing her to change sides multiple times throughout the play. These actions portray Mary as a good person who is also kind of shy, easy to give way in the face of risk. Despite all of this one of the main things driving her character especially in act 2 is her desire for power.

In the first act of the play Mary is able to immediately cement her sense of caution toward risk and wish for the resolution of the conflict through truth. This is best seen in the quote "We must tell the truth, Abby! You'll only be whipped for dancin', and the other things!". Even though it is to avoid harsh punishment her willingness to accept punishment rather than denying it altogether says much about her character.

Her desire for power mainly manifests in her obsession in the court. She gets so caught up in the role and looses her sight of justice and fair trial. This can be clearly seen in the quote "with greater impatience with him: I told you the proof. It's hard proof, hard as rock, the judges said" this done with the only "proof" being that Elizabeth could not recite the 10 commandments.

One of the major scenes that show how flip floppy Mary's character is can be seen in act 3 in the quote "DANFORTH: Then you tell me that you sat in my court, callously lying, when you knew that people would hang by your evidence? (She does not answer.)Answer me!
MARY WARREN, almost inaudibly: I did, sir.
DANFORTH: How were you instructed in your life? Do you not know that God damns all liars? (She cannot speak.) Or is it now that you lie?
MARY WARREN: No, sir—I am with God now."
This shows how she is in contrast to earlier statements she made and this contrast shows weakness of the character's will.
