"Hello, my name is Crystal Flores, and welcome to my presentation on multicultural education. This toolkit was developed to support inclusive teaching practices that honor and uplift diverse learners in our classroom environments.

Activities: Utilize texts in classroom discussions to explore themes of identity, immigration, and social justice from a multicultural viewpoint.

Activities: Incorporate them into classroom lessons such as social studies or history, encouraging students to analyze these events from multiple perspectives.

Activities: Instead of only teaching the American Civil Rights Movement, educators can add a curriculum that includes South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement and India’s struggle for independence, which will allow students to explore common themes of resistance, justice, and change across cultures.

Activities: Include examples of reggae music from Africa or Gamelan music from Indonesia for students during music class, as well as integrating Mexican folk art or Japanese Sumi-e (ink wash painting) as lesson for art class.

Activities: Facilitate classroom projects where students explore cultural traditions and historical events related to their background or interest. For example, After a presentation on Indigenous art, classmates may ask respectful questions, leading to meaningful dialogue and connection when going over history.

For example, students can select one story from a set of four culturally diverse short stories.

Visual learners can illustrate the scene.

Verbal learners can write a character diary.

Kinesthetic learners can act out the dialogue.

Students can also have the choice of essay, video blog, or group presentation

Students can create an artifact box or museum exhibit featuring 3–5 items (real or symbolic) that represent their cultural heritage, migration story, or a community tradition.

Activities: Students will describe a cultural celebration and explain its significance

Visuals: Photos of global celebrations (Diwali, Lunar New Year, Juneteenth)

Language: Sentence frames: "Like in my culture, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo."

Bilingual option: Students can write part of their response in their home language

Presentation scaffolding: Students can use slides with pictures or short bullets

Students can also record audio instead of presenting in front of their peers.

Activities: An inclusive affirmation wall that displays positive messages in the student's native language. Examples

Have students create a cultural calendar or celebration wall

Create a large calendar that highlights holidays and observances from different cultures and religions. After invite the students to share how they celebrate these holidays at home.

All About me Boards

Allow students to create personal boards showing their name origin, language, cultural symbols, favorite foods, and traditions.

Display these around the room or on a hallway bulletin board.

Read a book like “Same, Same but Different” by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw.

Teach how to say "hello" and "welcome" in several languages spoken in your classroom.

Students create personal welcome signs using their home languages and decorate them with cultural symbols, flags, or colors.

Display signs at the classroom entrance or hallway.

Invite parents to volunteer for monthly culture spotlight days.

Host a family story night where grandparents or elders read stories in different languages.

Students can also research food insecurity in immigrant communities, visit a local food bank, and design culturally inclusive recipe cards or care packages.
