I think the disadvantages of CLT is first, it can be difficult to concentrate. It would be nice to exchange opinions smoothly because students talk freely, but if they talk too much at the same time, it can be difficult to concentrate because it gets noisy. I experienced this approach in native English class at school and academy. The native English teacher gave a situation, I memorized the phrases and practiced. I was happy to learn the contextual conversation in the class, but I don't think it was useful in real life because it was not available outside of the situation I learned in class.

In my opinion, ALM's advantages are made up to the level that students can do and there is a reward for correct answers, so students can participate well in class. Also, students can learn more on their own because it is done step by step. On the downside, it can cause students to lose interest in the process of correcting pronunciation. I once heard and memorized the basic sentence pattern set in the elementary school English class.
