I found it interesting that Selye’s research suggest that the body’s response to stress is similar to it’s response when introduced to an infectious agent. This is called the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). The Alarm Stage is the first stage. In this stage the body enters the fight-or-flight mode which yields both physiological and psychological arousal in an attempt arm the subject for defense. This is followed by the Resistance Stage. In this stage the body tries to repair the damage caused by the initial stage by attempting to restore itself back to normal conditions. If this stage is prolonged or accelerated then it may be followed by anger, exhaustion, or low temperament. If the first two stages occur to no avail, then the body may enter the last stage: the Exhaustion Stage. Heart Rate and respiration slows down in order to conserve whatever may be essential for daily living and modalities. But if the heightened level of stress persists, then the person will eventually become subject to a number of stress-related disorders. In conclusion, I am definitely not immune to stress. Like most, I have a very stressful life. However, the way that I keep stress at a minimum is by making time to do the things that I love. This method has proven to be the most effective.
