Delaware was partly involved in the war because the structure on Pea Patch island became a prison in 1862. Delaware also gave the Union 11,236 soldiers. It would fight slavery with the North and remain apart of the United States. What side did Delaware choose? Delaware was a border state. A border state is a slave state that remained in the Union but bordered the Confederacy.

Delaware was affected because it lost a lot of its population by giving soldiers to the Union. They also had a prison in their state that thousands of people died in. People got sent to this prison on Pea Patch island all the time and they would deal with them all while helping other states since no battles or attacks were taking place in Delaware.

The 2nd infantry regiment was formed of Delaware volunteers. This was formed after President Lincoln's second call. The war department set new stuff and asked for 4 regiments. On May 21 1861 they began forming more regiments. 5 companies came from Maryland, 3 from Philadelphia and only 2 from Delaware. The Delaware people got the name of “The Crazy Delawares”. These people fought at the Potomac river with 805 men.

Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont served at sea in the European waters, West Indies, South American coast, the Far East and the Mediterranean waters. Du Pont was a big part. He helped plan naval operations for the Union. And just helped a lot in general with troops, etc. He captured forts along the southern Atlantic coast. He also commanded the Philadelphia army and was in the Navy. Du pont also commanded the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and led the win on Port Royal South Carolina for which he earned the thanks from Congress and got promoted to rear admiral.

Delaware contributed 16 military units to the Union Army. 11,236 soldiers. They would also contribute supplies such as guns and etc.
