Economic prosperity and social dislocation directly reduces national population growth rates. Wealthy areas also typically have low growth rates while poor areas typically have high growth rates. According to the demographic transition, countries start with high birth and death rates. In the 2nd phase, the death rates start to decline and rapid population growth ensues. Then in the 3rd phase, death rates continue to decline while birth rates also start to fall. Finally in the 4th and final phase, both birth and death rates fall, stabilizing the population.
.

There are 3 main types of population policies that governments enforce: 1. Expansive population policies, which aim to raise the rate of natural increase via large families. 2. Eugenic population policies (don’t exist anymore), which are designed to favor one racial or cultural section of the population over others. 3. Restrictive population policies, which reduces the rate of natural increase of a country. One of the best examples of a restrictive population policy is China’s now deceased one-child policy, where each family is only allowed to have one child or face punishment.
