Nicaragua is bordered with Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. It touches the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on the sides. I think these borders are based more on physical characteristics than cultural differences. Along the southern border is Lake Nicaragua, helping draw that border. In the northern region, there are several mountains and it begins to have more volcanoes, which helped define that border. Also, the Spaniards that conquered it would have been stopped by such physical boundaries, helping them lay out Nicaragua in those areas, not culture.

The full circles are the borders between countries, the dotted black is physical features used to determine the borders, and the dotted red is the border dispute between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This dispute has a long past, but basically each side claims certain parts of the rough area circled as their own. Most of the water involved in the dispute is currently controlled by Nicaragua, and they allow Costa Rica to use it for tourism and such but refuses to allow law enforcement to be present.

Nicaragua is a presidential republic, with legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
There has been a history of tensions between the government power and the other political parties running, but that is found in every democracy. It is slightly heightened compared to other countries because their economy is not very good, allowing extra blame on whoever is currently in power. There was a lot of devolution in the early history of Nicaragua because they were colonized by Spain and ignored most of their orders (Spain was too far to tell them what to do effectively), but it has decreased as Nicaragua gained freedoms and stability.

I think Nicaragua is compact. This is because it is a smallish country, with no areas jutting out of other countries jutting in. The shape of Nicaragua does not harm them as it has a lot of area for shipping with the ocean and seas, but the simple borders and lack of economic security can sometimes put them at risk.
