Behavioral Theory

Behavioral theory in respect to motivation was influenced by a man named Burrhus Frederic Skinner a.k.a. B.F. Skinner. He was one of the most well-known behaviorists. The belief behind behavioral theory is that our behaviors are shaped by negative and positive reinforcements. That is to say that if we do something and it has negative consequences, we are less likely to do that again. If we do something and it has positive consequences (a reward of some kind), then we are more apt to repeat that behavior.

Jean Piaget is considered the "father" of and credited for the Cognitive Theory. This theory is based on the belief that our motivation and behaviors are shaped by our past experiences, whether good or bad. It is based on the idea of a schema: a loosely woven network of ideas and beliefs in our conscious and unconscious mind that influences our decision making. This means that mistakes and past trauma can actually be beneficial if we use this theoretical approach because we can grow from what we learn.

Social theory is a theory that was developed by Albert Bandura and it consists of four separate stages, unlike the other theories. These four stages are attention, retention, reproduction and motivation. The theory suggests that we are influenced and motivated by our surroundings and the people we see. This, however, does not mean that we WILL emulate that behavior, only that we might. This theory is the only theory of the four discussed that seems to need to find the purpose rather than already providing it by a sense of self-awareness.

Humanistic Theory

The humanistic theory is based on the belief that we are all capable of free will and shaping our own destiny. Abraham Maslow shaped this theory in 1943. He described this theory with the help of a five level pyramid. The bottom row consists basic survival needs which are things sch as eating and sleeping, up through to the top two which are the most complex involving finding ourselves, our likes, dislikes, trauma, memories, and so on. Our actions and behaviors are thought to be shaped and formed by those needs.

The theory that would serve me best is the cognitive theory. I believe this will help me because of everything I have been through in my life. All of the things that I believe in now, have been shaped by the life I chose to lead. All of these things changed inside me when I had had enough of the sadness consuming me, and I used these past traumas and experiences to learn self-awareness. Once I understood my past experiences differently and have been utilizing what I have learned from them, things have changed for the better in the aspect that I have more drive and motivation now because I do not want to go down that same road again.

Motivation Technique 1

The first motivation technique I can utilize is breaking down tasks into more manageable things to complete. For me, I have AudHd, (a beautiful blend of ADHD an Autism) and it can really be a hindrance at the most inopportune of times, especially in school. To add to this, I have recently been experiencing some pretty significant health changes, and things get overwhelming. If I break down tasks and then I check them off on a to-do-list, then I will find more motivation to complete them because I won't feel so overwhelmed.

The second motivation technique I can use is to set myself challenging but realistic goals. I tend to put too much on myself and then beat myself up for not being able to complete them and then I let myself down even more unnecessarily. However, if I set more attainable goal, and use the previously mention motivation technique, I believe that a blend of these two will serve me well.
