Great Gatsby, and the American Dream

In the book “The Great Gatsby” by Fitzgerald the American Dream is depicted as wealth and success of a person. For example when nick states the following “I lived at West Egg, the—well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them. [...] Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water” he is basically states the difference between the people who have achieved the American Dream of success and the poor who are hoping or never reached the American Dream. In his statement he always talks about the ones who have been successful in a very angelic way unlike when he speaks about the unsuccessful people in west egg. Another example of how the Great Gatsby depicts the American Dream is when Nick also states the following “ A dead man passed us in a hearse heaped with blooms, followed by two carriages with drawn blinds and by more cheerful carriages for friends. The friends looked out at us with the tragic eyes and short upper lips of south-eastern Europe, and I was glad that the sight of Gatsby's splendid car was included in their somber holiday. As we crossed Blackwell's Island a limousine passed us, driven by a white chauffeur, in which sat three modish Negroes, two bucks and a girl. I laughed aloud as the yolks of their eyeballs rolled toward us in haughty rivalry.” In this statement Nick describes how success follows you after death also as well as how success is possible for anyone because back then is was very rare for a black man to be able to live the American Dream and be successful and he shuts that down by describing the successful black man and his friends.

American Dream Today

To me the American Dream is overcoming barriers in order to reach success. For example if your parents didn't graduate high school or make it to college and this has also been a pattern in previous generation being able to break the chain and graduate as well as go to college for me is the American Dream. You have already achieved something in order to become successful and that is part of the American Dream. Like Kimberly Amadeo in “The end of the American Dream” American dream, the idea that life will get better, that progress is inevitable if we obey the rules and work hard, that material prosperity is assured, has been replaced by a hard” she basically said that American Dream is the idea that no matter what life will get better just as I had mentioned earlier with my example life got better when the person broke the pattern of the non graduates. Another example of what the American Dream means to me is mentioned in Kimberlys Amadeo “You can always work hard, but if you aren’t given the opportunity or you don’t have the funds to be able to continue working hard then you never get the chance to get out of where you are” this quotes states that no matter how hard a person works they will never be able to be successful because they don't have the funds to and I disagree with the statement. If a person works hard and truly wants to succeed they will find any ways to be able to get what they want in order to achieve the American Dream.
