Depressant- Slows down the body’s functions by decreasing breathing and heart rates as well as lowering blood pressures. 

Barbiturates

This drug is a sedative that relaxes a person when taken in small doses. Larger doses lead to feeling more need for sleep, or hypnotics. Physicians rarely prescribe barbiturates these days because they have a high potential for abuse making them dangerous. An abuser of Barbiturates becomes more dependent once they develop tolerance to the drug. This causes them to react slowly to the environment, walk slowly, and slur their speech.

Street names: Downers, blue heavens, blue velvet, blue devils

Method of use: It is a pill people take by mouth and takes effect within a 30 minute time period.

Short Term Effects: Reduced inhibitions, relaxation and sedation, lethargy and unconsciousness in higher doses, decreased anxiety.

Long term Effects: Slowed reflexes, shortened attention span, short- and long-term memory loss, cardiac issues, potential liver and kidney problems, the development of physical dependence.

Stimulant: Increases heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and alertness.

Amphetamines: These are a powerful group of stimulants that are prescription drugs sometimes sold illegally as “uppers” or “speed”. Amphetamines give the user feelings of high energy and well being but wear off quickly leaving them feeling depressed. This feeling usually leads to taking more doses continuously making the person drug dependent. 

Street names: Wake ups, get ups, boot ups, sparkles, dexies, footballs

Method of use: Can be taken as a pill, crushed and snorted, or dissolved in water and injected. 

Short Term Effects: Quicker reaction times, feelings of energy/wakefulness, excitement, increased attentiveness and concentration, feelings of euphoria.

Long term Effects: Paranoia, hallucinations, violent behavior, cravings for the drug, compulsive drug-seeking behavior, convulsions.

Hallucinogen: Causes a distorted sense of reality by overloading the brain with sensory information. The abuser won’t be able to tell what is real and could experience memory loss or personality changes. 

LSD is the strongest hallucinogen known, stands for lysergic acid diethylamide, and has unpredictable effects that can either stimulate or depress the central nervous system. 

Street names: Boomers, Acid, Loony Toons, Golden Dragon, California Sunshine

Method of use: Transfused into a small block of paper or into a tablet.

Short Term Effects: Dilated pupils, change in body temperature, sweating, and a dry mouth

Long term Effects: Increased panic and delusions, flashbacks, and severe depression.

Description: Estay is a drug that changes the way a mind thinks and sometimes causes hallucinations.

Street names: Candy, Molly, Adam, Beans

Method of use: Swallowing orally, sometimes anally 

Short Term Effects: Impaired judgment, False sense of affection, Confusion, Depression, Sleep problems

Long term Effects: Long-lasting brain damage affecting thought and, memory, It is as if the brain switchboard was torn apart, then rewired backwards, Degenerated nerve branches and nerve endings, Depression, anxiety, memory loss
