The Chinese culture believes in the restoration of balance, which they call qi. The yin and yang philosophy should also be considered when providing care, this is the belief that illness occurs when one becomes unbalanced. In addition, yin and yang represents that everything is interdependent and needed for balance and harmony. For example, the yin symbolizes cold and the yang symbolizes hot. In this situation, it is necessary to ask the patient what foods and/or medicine is okay for them to consume.

Chinese immigration in the United States has a long and difficult history. During the 19th century, Chinese manual laborers (mostly men) migrated to the West Coast, where they found employment in agriculture, railroad construction. and other low-skilled jobs. Congress later passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 which suspended Chinese immigration for years and made it harder on immigrants to come to the U.S. Later on in 1979, U.S. China relations were normalized beginning a second wave of Chinese migration to the United States.

Cupping treatment process includes the warming and the placing of glass cups on the skin.

Because the cups are being warmed up by hot air this creates a vacuum effect when it is applied to a person’s skin

The treatment increase blood flow, loosens connective tissue, and stimulates healing in the area.

Toxins are being successfully removed and stagnation has decreased in cupping. However, cupping can result in temporary bruising and scarring.

The philosophy behind the treatment is that pain occurs because of a blockage of Qi. The body is suffering from irregular flow so cupping in certain areas can allow the blockage of Qi to flow normally again and relive pain.
