Theme statement: People with outstanding speaking skills are able to persuade and control the ones who listen.
Page 58: "... Squealer spoke so persuasively, and the three dogs who happened to be with him growled so threateningly, that they accepted his explanation without further question." (Orwell)

Due to their illiterate lives and fear, the animals are forced into submission and don't question the pigs authority.

Page 69: "'Comrades,' he said quietly, 'do you know who is responsible for this... SNOWBALL'"
Here, Napoleon is trying to persuade that the perpetrator was Snowball. Us readers can infer that it wasn't Snowball, and Napoleon is just trying to get the public to dislike his opponent, which he does eventually.

Page 88: "...we expressed our longing for a better society... but that society has now been established."

Squealer, who is tremendously good at speaking and writing, is able to convince the animals, who are basically illiterate, that everything is better than the past, showing how easy the animals are swayed by speech.

page 67 "it says, 'No animal shall sleep in bed with sheets,'"

page 108 it talks about squealer changing the rules but is caught during the process by the dogs.

Napoleon sold Boxer just to get money for his own benefit. He is corrupt

"Squealer announced that the hens, who had just come in to lay again, must surrender their eggs" (76).

Napoleon is sacrificing lives of the hens for his own benefit. He is trading with the outside world.

Theme Statement: Because of human nature, many leaders with great power are corrupt.

Being intellectually inferior will put you at a greater risk of being deceived.
""It says, 'No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets,'" ... Clover had not remembered that the Fourth Commandment mentioned sheets..." (Orwell 67)
Clover did not remember anything with sheets, but her memory is too bad and she's not intellectually superior enough to say something about it.

"The van had previously been the property of a knacker, and had been bought by the veterinary surgeon, who had not yet painted the old name out" (124)
The animals clearly saw that the van belonged to a Horse Slaughterer, but since they're too intellectually inferior to be able to clearly say they saw it and work hard to prove that they're right, they believed everything squealer said.

"Squealer, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at hand there lay a lantern, a paintbrush, and an overturned pot of white paint...None of the animals could form any idea as to what this meant" (108-109)

None of the animals were able to figure out that the pigs were changing the rules even after they saw Squealer with the paint.

Power over the intellectually inferior

Not being able to read can effect your ability to understand what is going on around you.

Some leaders use intellectually challenged people to their advantage.

Examples: The time when squealer was changing the commandments and no animal understood what he was doing.

When Boxer was taken away by the horse slaughterer and none of the animals (except pigs and Benjamin) knew where he was being taken.

-Old Major sets down the basic rules of Animal Farm. Page 8-12
-Napoleon slowly takes over the position of Stalin. page 53
-Squealer under the command of Napoleon and snowball, writes the 7 commandments, which keep order and establish rules. 24-25
-squealer is propaganda and he prevents animal farms citizens from arguing with the government (pigs). 35-36
-napoleons dogs is the secret police and they scare all animals that may be a threat to him 53

Although the animals sometimes don't understand what he's saying, they just go along with it because they aren't as intellectual as the pigs.

The pigs are changing animal's memories. The animals remember Snowball as a hero but yet as soon as the pigs say he is the enemy, the animals follow along.

Napoleon used his power to take food from the other animals and for himself and his dogs.

The pigs were altered the rules Old Major had left them so they could be more comfortable
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" (134).

With Snowball and Napoleon as the leaders, animal farm was more equal because there isn't just one animal controlling everything, but because Napoleon was so power hungry he drove Snowball out and portrayed him as a villain.
