All About Zora Neale Hurston 1891-1959

Zora Neale Hurston was a historical black woman at the time of the Harlem renaissance and made groundbreaking progress as a leader, writer, and anthropologist protecting the rights of African Americans. Hurston spent the majority of her early life in the first all-black community in Eatonville Florida in the 1890s. While growing up her father spent many years as the mayor of her town in Florida during the height of Jim Crow. Hurston grew up in an environment mostly free of racial tensions increasing her self-confidence greatly. The wealth of the black culture surrounding Zora inspired her work immensely. In 1918, Hurston moved to D.C. and enrolled part-time at Howard University where her teachers encouraged her writing. Her first published piece and start to her career was one of her stories which got printed in her college's literary clubs magazine. At an exciting time where many other black writers and artists went to new york city to participate in the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston joined along to contribute to the black literary and cultural movement of the era. Hurston became a popular figure and writer because of her talent, intelligence, and social appeal. Lastly, Zora Neale Hurston wrote and then published an autobiography about herself, of course. Hurston died at the age of 69 in 1960. Hurston was an incredibly successful and powerful woman/leader and took much part in the evolution of the Harlem Renaissance. She focused on where African Americans and women struggled and used her writing to focus on their hardships.
