In western capitalist society, leaving the countryside for the cities was motivated by industrial and commercial concentration in urban spaces, causing people to move in search of jobs and services.

In cities, there is a great population concentration in small spaces and, in order for people to live well, with the minimum living conditions, services such as garbage collection, health, treated water, public lighting, security, sewage collection and others that encompass the so-called "quality of life". To live with a minimum of quality in the cities, there are some conditions, such as housing. Some people own their own homes, others live on the streets, but the poorest people are forced to move to the periphery of urban areas, building their homes in inadequate places, such as river banks and streams, or on hillsides. These locations are very dangerous and are in a constant risk situation, exposed to floods or landslides. Constructions in inadequate areas also often have another problem: lack of basic sanitation. Services such as provision of treated and potable water, garbage collection and sewage are essential to prevent disease and ensure a better quality of life. The large flow of cars, especially in the big urban centers, also interferes in the quality of life, since the individual transport generates congestions and, consequently, increases the time spent in the routes. Urban mobility, with planning and investment in public transport (bus, train, subway), is essential to increase the quality of life of the population, ensuring that it can easily access city services, be it health, education, culture and others.
