Teaching is a difficult occupation. Educators are expected to cover as much content as possible to cram for the state mandated exams at the end of the year. This causes teachers to push through the content at a very fast pace, sometimes at the expense of students. Some student’s pick up on the teachers desire to hurry through lessons and are afraid to bring the lesson to a grinding halt when they have a question. Instead of speaking up, students sit in their seat silently and let the lesson go on, further contributing to their confusion.

The product I have designed is the “Stop and learn” button. This is a small button on the corner of each student’s desk that a student can press anytime they care confused. Once the button is pressed, a small device in the back of the room will display a red light, indicating to the teacher that a student is confused. This system is completely anonymous. Students who are afraid of speaking up can anonymously hit the button, telling the teacher to slow down. The teacher will see the light, know someone is confused, and reteach that concept, explain in more detail, or break it down further.

This small button is powered by a single battery and sticks conveniently onto the top of the student’s desk. It works by sending a wireless signal to the monitor every time the button is pressed. The monitor is plugged into a wall outlet and will display a light every time the button is pressed.

This simple product is a game changer for students because it gives all students a voice. Many students who are afraid of speaking up will not have the opportunity to inform the teacher of their confusion without having to speak out to whole the class.

Mr. Claypoole is teaching a lesson on the four main causes of World War One and is moving at a quick pace. His eyes scan the class and it appears that everyone is following along. As he describes each of the four main causes he is using cues and questions to asses student understanding. Once he covers the fourth and final cause, he asks the question “does everyone feel comfortable connecting the four main causes to each other?” He gets one student to nod his head indicating a “yes”, but he notices a red light go off in the back of the room. This light signals that some student, somewhere in his class is confused. Mr. Claypoole understands that he needs to re-teach the way all four main causes are connected. He recovers the material and once again asks the question “does everyone feel comfortable connecting the four main causes to each other?” Some students say yes and no lights go off. Mr. Claypoole uses this as a sign that he cleared up the confusion for one student. The Stop and Learn button gives all students a voice, even those who are afraid.
