Marco Grassi

How to be Financially Free: Personal Finance for Kids by Joseph Lansberg

Ages 9-11

This book is a short and simple introduction to the basic principles of personal finance, including basic easy to understand descriptions of money, budgeting, saving, assets/liabilities, investing, and credit. This book offers an introduction to how personal finance works in a way that will make sense for younger children.

I like that this book is such a simple introduction. Since it’s easy to grasp for younger children, it can help to implant some knowledge that will be very useful later on in life. As an introduction, it will prepare the children to learn about personal finance in more complex detail in a higher level class, making it easier for the high school teachers to bring in advanced concepts without having to worry about whether or not students understand the basics.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone teaching financial literacy at the late elementary school or early middle school level. It doesn’t go too in depth for students to understand, and it helps build a foundation that later classes can build on. By introducing these concepts earlier in life, it will set up the student for much greater success in the future, both in high school classes and in their adult lives.

4/5 stars

Eddie Hoegler

“How To Adult” By: Jake Cousineau

The book is recommended and I find it most appropriate for grades 9-12.

I found this book to be very insightful on the big things that can help young students to become financially successful. The book is broken down into eleven chapters. The chapters range from learning about interest, credit/credit cards, and taxes all the way up to loans and mortgages. While reading through the chapters there are diagrams and examples that help clarify the ideas given by the author to the readers. I am a visual learner and find that having the figures periodically throughout the book is extremely helpful to have so that I can fully grasp the concept that is being taught.

What I liked most about this book was the simplicity in the way it was written. Jake Cousineau did a great job introducing and explaining, what can be a very difficult topic extremely well. The book is not written to scare the reader, but instead enlightens them. Again I find the graphs and figures to be very helpful. They are a support tool to the written information so that students can have a visual reference.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is teaching financial literacy. It is full of knowledge for someone who is just starting out or who is very knowledgeable in the subject. I would even push for this book to be part of the class material for each student. This book can be used as a reinforcement tool for the class and life.

5 Stars

Ted Search

"Stocks, Bonds and Taxes: A Comprehensive Handbook and Investment Guide for Everybody," by Phillip B. Chute

Recommended for use by students in grades 10-12

The author of this book is a certified tax agent working for the IRS. His stated purpose in writing the book was to provide the reader with what they need to know to match the knowledge level of the average stockbroker, as well as to be able to understand the parts of the U.S. tax code that pertain to his or her investments. Rather than focus on economic theory, the author limits his material to real-life scenarios, including examples relevant to the topic. (This, I think, makes this book ideal for high school students who often ask why they need to know something; hearing the subject’s real-life relevance is likely to pique their interest more than “boring” theoretical information.) The book is divided into two sections; investments and life planning, with the first section divided into four parts - equities, bonds, mutual funds and “other investments;” and the second section divided into three parts - financial planning, death & taxes, and “other important financial considerations.” The book includes application exercises after each section’s part (with an answer key at the end of the book) as well as three appendixes.

I chose this book because it is easily readable for students and isn’t “dull;” it’s written in a way that is likely to keep a high school student’s interest. Economics can be somewhat of a dry topic, and this book presents the material in a way that students can not only comprehend, but also enjoy. I especially liked the fact that this book includes application exercises which allow students to practice what they learned from reading the material.

I would certainly recommend this book to an instructor teaching financial literacy (at least at the high school level; the book might be a bit advanced for a middle-school student.) This book would likely be quite beneficial to the students in the class, especially coupled with lectures and classroom discussions based on the material found in the book.

STAR rating - 4 ½ out of 5

The book provides valuable information on how to calculate your assets vs. liabilities as well as how to invest smartly and plan for future goals. It also provides resources on how to file your taxes and identify deductible items in your life. This book also provides really great suggestions on how to spend money responsibly and effectively freeze unneeded spending. Overall, this book provides a necessary reference point for many of the financial aspects in your life and gives valuable direction on how to make smart decisions.
What did I like:
I really liked how this book broke down all of the information into picture format. This makes it much easier to digest and gives valuable visual reference points. The book covered a wide variety of topics which are very relevant to anyone planning for their future or trying to improve on their current situation. I chose this type of book because the topic of finance can be very confusing and reading a long drawn out novel can not only be time consuming but in all honesty, boring! This book can be read in one sitting or used as a reference point whenever you need to.
Would you recommend:
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach or learn about financial literacy. Not only is it a great reference point for teachers with various topic suggestions but for the student it can also provide valuable details for successful financial planning. It is appropriate for Middle Level education all the way through High School and even College level.
Rating:
5 Star

The Teen's Guide to Personal Finance: Basic Concepts in Personal Finance That Every Teen Should Know by: Joshua Holmberg and David Bruzzese

3. This book would be appropriate for grades 9-12.

4. This book was written by the authors because of when they were teenagers, and how they did not pay any mind to making good financial decision. They were not taught these lesson when they were at school, or even at home by their parents. They learned many tings the hard way and through experience. This book is intended for teenagers to see and not follow in their footsteps when it comes to personal finance. This book touches on things from opening a bank account, to investing in mutual funds. It is intended to help provide students with strategies that they can use to set up their financial lives for success.

5. I chose this book, as I was just looking for anything that seemed interesting and this one caught my eye/ It was also a book that no one had reviewed yet, so I made the purchase. After reading, I like the book because it covers so much ground. You can teach younger people some of the basic concepts, as well as go into more nuanced ways to make money and manage your finances for older grades.

6. I would recommend this book for someone teaching personal finance, although it does have some concepts that may not be brought in until a student is older. It does have graphs and figures that can also help with teaching the book.

7. 3.75/5 Stars

1. Madison Mattingly
2. Personal Finance for Teens by Carol H. Cox
3. This book would be appropriate for late middle school-high school students, perhaps even graduates.
4. Carol H. Cox was a student at UC Berkley when she really developed an interest in personal finance. this nook is the result of her interest. This book is marketed to students who are preparing to begin the process of making tough adult decisions as well as for parents of these students. Cox offers advice on many topics in the finance world, including but not limited to, controlling spending, achieving saving goals, how to choose, open, and manage a student checking account, and building a great credit score.
5. I chose this book firstly because it caught my eye--the title had the buzzwords that I was looking for "for teens." After reading about this book, I was very intrigued. what really drew me in, though, was all of the topics she covers in this book. I think these are real topics that students, as well as parents, need help navigating and preparing through.
6. I think I would definitely recommend this book to someone who wants to teach personal finance. I think it would be great to use as a textbook option, going through it together as a class, or even just choosing certain topics that students/teachers show interest in or depending on what the class needs.
7. 4 stars.

This book is appropriate for grades 9-12. It is even useful for a quick, easy read for college students as well.

4. Burkholder attended the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management focusing on finance and accounting. He then worked as a CPA for one of the largest public accounting firms in the world. He is now a member of a Corporate Finance department at a higher education institution.
This book will go over the importance of saving and making your money work for you. It shows how to avoid debt and making smart financial decisions that you can start making today in order to save more money for your future.

5. This book is extremely useful. It talks about and gives real examples for the value of saving, what compound interest is and why it is beneficial. It describes how to avoid debt as well as how to make your money work for you. He used plenty of examples and kept using them throughout the book in order to keep your attention by using the same numbers so you can see where all the numbers and figures were coming from. He stated he was in financial trouble at an early age and used that as a motivator to help other young adults avoid the same mistakes he made.

6. I would recommend this book to others as a reading book, and I would definitely recommend this to be used within the classroom. This helps students set up ideas and principles for the rest of their lives.

1. Adam Paynter

2. Financial Starter Kit: Gain Financial Literacy and Avoid the Pitfalls of the American Dream by Symone B. Beez

3. This book is appropriate for grades 9-12

4. This book was written based off of the authors experiences from being in debt to becoming financially responsible and successful. In this book it explains financial fundamental lessons that helped her get out of a terrible financial situation. The lessons in this book can help you stay out of debt, work your way out of debt, and help you realize the importance of becoming educated in personal finance. The book goes into details about learning to change your spending habits and avoid what the author refers to as "financial traps of the American dream".

5. I like this book because it is not solely based on her personal experiences but it is still relatable to the reader. The book is very detailed with important lessons and information yet does not leave you overloaded on the concepts making the book easy to read and understand and not dry and boring. The book is structured to where you do not have to read the chapters in order, you can skip around and still make sense of what is going on. The lessons in this book are easy to follow and apply to your own life.

6. I would recommend this book for someone teaching financial literacy to high school students. They could assign the entire book for them to read independently, or take chapters from it and make lessons out of them. Regardless of what they chose to do with the book, it would be hard not to gain anything from reading it.

7. I would give this book a 4 star rating.

1) Jacob Rosario

2) "How to Adult: Personal Finance for the Real World" by Jake Cousineau

3) Ages 16-24

4) This book is an eye opening experience for people that are in the near steps or beginning steps of adulthood. It walks you though the reality of being an adult; with financial topics such as insurance, credit, mortgages, debt, and even retirement. It is a way for younger people to see what they should really expect when becoming an adult, and how complicated it really is/

5) I like that it really shows the difficulties of being an adult. Rather than having it be very easy on the mind for people to think that it really is easy to get through adulthood, it shows the struggles that can really happen at any turn. It gives the reader a sense of needing to plan for the future, while also trying to make it clear that you need to make good decisions in the early stages of adulthood or else they can come back to hurt you down the road. It is a very simple read with chapters describing exactly what the financial ideas that are being discussed, while being able to connect the various discussion topics with one another throughout the chapters. I chose it because it is something that I personally needed to read in order to give myself a better idea as to what adulthood will be like in my very near future, and that I need to begin planning for it at the age of 20.

6) I would absolutely recommend this book to someone who is teaching financial literacy to high schoolers and college students, but probably not below that age bracket. This book describes things that can be complex for younger minds, but it is a necessity in my opinion for the people high school through college to read and have a better understanding of the real world in front of them when they become grown adults. This book allows them to get that better understanding, while also being a very simple read that is not too time consuming.

7) I would say 5 stars, it wasn't a very long read, while giving me a very real and detailed look into things that I previously did not have as good of an understanding for.
