There can be many different reasons for the gap in pay depending on age groups. The common trend is that the younger an employee is, the lower their wage will be. This is why some firms (e.g. McDonalds) tend to hire younger staff with the same productivity levels as an older worker, as the firms pay them a lower minimum wage.

As wage rises in male-dominated industries such as transport outpaced those for nurses and teachers.

Men employed by the state government had a median salary 6.2 per cent – or $6205 – higher than the median salary for women, according to data tabled in state parliament this month.
