This setting is significant because it's where George tells Lennie to go if he ever encounters trouble, That if he ever encounters danger, this is a ''safe'' place to go to, However in the end this ''safe'' place that George was referring to, Lennie was killed. the clearing of the water also shows a place of peace.

Curley then repeatedly punched Lennie, so George had no choice to allow Lennie to defend himself which he did by catching Curley’s punch and breaking his hand.

Then to make it worse Curley’s wife walked in and they started talking about how Lennie likes to touch soft things like the puppy. Curley’s wife then allowed Lennie to touch her hair so he did so but didn’t let go. Curley’s wife then let out a scream and Lennie got nervous about what George will do. He then shared her to try and shut her up but then he accidentally broke her back, killing her.
