Riverside where George and Lennie stay for the night/Where Lennie dies.
The Salinas River, Clear warm water slipping through a stream with yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching a narrow pool

This setting is significant because it's where George tells Lennie to go if he ever encounters trouble, That if he ever encounters danger, this is a ''safe'' place to go to, However in the end this ''safe'' place that George was referring to, Lennie was killed. the clearing of the water also shows a place of peace.

Quote: “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool.”

Curley then repeatedly punched Lennie, so George had no choice to allow Lennie to defend himself which he did by catching Curley’s punch and breaking his hand.

Quote: George yelled again, "I said get him."
Curley's fist was swinging when Lennie reached for it. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie's big hand.

Description: Lennie was playing with his puppy and then the puppy faked to bite Lennie so Lennie slapped the puppy killing it in the process. Then to make it worse Curley’s wife walked in and they started talking about how Lennie likes to touch soft things like the puppy. Curley’s wife then allowed Lennie to touch her hair so he did so but didn’t let go. Curley’s wife then let out a scream and Lennie got nervous about what George will do. He then shared her to try and shut her up but then he accidentally broke her back, killing her.

Quote: And Lennie said softly to the puppy, "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice. I didn't bounce you hard."

Description: Everyone needs someone in their life to look after them and to be there for them. It is important that Lennie has George to look after him so he does not get into trouble and so he doesn’t hurt himself. This is shown in every part of the book where Lennie is in trouble no George helps him out of it.

Quote: "But not us! An' why? Because... because I got you
to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's
why."
