Describe an educator who inspired you. How did he/she facilitate the participants/ students?

I have so many role models in my life. I generally admire facilitators who have mastery over their craft.

One of them ensured his participants have impactful experience and often because of that, his style of facilitation is minimalist and sometimes, he is even very 'telling' in his facilitation. But because the students experience much, their sharing is forthcoming.

I also admire another colleague who is creative is getting her pax to share. One week, she would use landart to get them to share. In another week, for the same activity, she would ask them to draw to express themselves.

Her style is energetic and bubbly. The first colleague's is very 'uncle' and calm in his facilitation.

I'm drawn to educators who used the stories to facilitate. Especially for educators who shared their personal stories; through their stories I may feel connections due to common life experiences. It makes me feel at ease and more ready to share. I think stories have the power to bridge gaps between educator and students.

This facilitator I worked with is very sharp in picking up what is happening with his participant and without overwhelming participants with questions or information, gets the participant reflecting and moving.

Furthermore, he can find relevant links for the participant and he can summarised what he learns and make it relevant for the situation and thus the participants.

Lastly, his neutrality. He does not get in the way of the participant learning nor does he let's his ego get in the way of being a good facilitator

The facilitator that inspired me was able to put his/her level down with the participants, choice of words used allow us to be engaged, comfortable and open to share about our thoughts, feelings and connect with the group.

Allowing us to leave with some food for thought where some things can be discovered at a later stage of the programme.

The facilitator is neutral on his/her opinion, and leaving the group reflective.

I was a pretty rowdy and problematic student in the past. There were only a few particular teachers who saw the good in me. That gave me hope and I wanna give the same hope to others.

I have a few educators that come to mind and they kinda have the same vibe and methods that make learning fun. Their facilitation skills can capture the class and they fine tune they way they address different students that have different learning capabilities.

Most importantly they empower the class and also give autonomy to our learning.

I educator that came to mind specifically is my school facilitator. He can pick up small minute details of his class and come up with alternatives to aid us. He even spent extra time to ensure that i could try out different ways to ease my tasks without causing aggravation my healing knees.

There was this facilitator I met during my OBS camp. He was open minded and always encouraged us to share our own opinions on the certain activities we do. Furthermore, he always hear us out before saying his own opinions. He does not interrupt us when we are sharing.

When facilitating, he tend to conduct his classes in a fun and engaging way, that attracts all of us. We do not feel bored.

There was this one facilitator during my Secondary 2 camp. My friends are the loud ones in the class whereas I'm the opposite. I like to be on my own and only speak up when necessary. As days pass, this facilitator has taken a lot of initiative to talk to me with my friends and individually. She made me feel more comfortable to speak in a group setting and is always willing to hear my opinion on any matter.

She ensures that everyone is engaged, including the quiet ones. She gives us a chance by picking us out when she has a question to ask us.

I had a coach who inspired me. He would always come up with problems that we as a team had to solve together. And whatever solutions we came up with, we were told to test it out ourselves and determine if it works or not. And if it didn't, we had to try again. This gave us a sense of responsibility towards the team. It also served to activate our minds and got us to come up with unique solutions.

Throughout my years of learning, I've come across various different types of facilitators. However, there are a couple of individuals that remained etched in my mind.

There was this facilitator who was very bubbly and interesting. She always look for ways to gather our attention. However, through such methods, she does not forget her main objective and sets aside a time to teach us but also make it an enjoyable experience for the rest of her students too.

There was a coach who would always be stern towards us, not because he was unreasonable but because he felt that we were underperforming. He also allows us to experiment different ways and method in order to improve the team's chemistry. When we asks him question, instead of giving us the answer which would be impractical, he would asks us to recap a particular a theory or skills, in order to help us recap and solve the problem

I think this bring back when I was chosen to be a peer leader. my faci was the same faci that had took me before in another camp that same year.

As the Faci was talking to me as if im a friend to him. As the others find out why he has been more kind to me then the other it change his way of talking. and treated everyone equal. Because during hard situations he was clam and knew how to talk to his fellow participants.

I had a coach who was firm when coaching. Despite being firm/fierce, he was understanding and push me to my limit. He did not put me down at any point of time and always put that "bond" by sharing his knowledge in a proper manner.

What I meant by proper manner would be in a kind but firm way. This way, I was able to focus on the information he is sharing. There are many coaches that I have encounter that will scold me if I did it wrongly. However, this coach will ensure that I get what he is saying and will try his best to make me process easier. Instead of scolding he will find other ways for me to overcome the challenge.

It was during my Sec 2 camp. My class had a group of instructors who were very energetic and engaging. It was unlike most camps whereby the instructors were very like strict or kept a certain distance. These groups of instructors despite being able to make the camp fun, they also inspired me to enjoy the outdoor experience by them loving what they do. The way they explained and how they demonstrated the skills and activities makes me interested and engaged. This led me to pursue Outdoor Education which ended up with me in DOAL.

I studied in an Anglo Indian school and i am fond of my ENGLISH, SCIENCE and HISTORY teachers. They were really dedicated teachers. when ever i think of the subject i remember them.
I cannot forget the English lesson on " Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening" where the teacher has to take a different lesson but she took this stopping by the woods- because it was raining out side the class and the atmosphere was so cool that we felt that we were in a snowy place , such a beautiful evergreen moment.

The educator who inspired me the most was someone who went all out beyond what she "had to do" to see the students get what is the best for them. She wasn't someone who was just "all talk" but someone whom we learn through her own life, to see how action turn into words, showing us how the simplest actions from our daily life can change the outcome at that moment.

It was a 3D2N camp and I had a a group of classmates who did not wanted to participate actively during our different activities. I admired the way he handled them. He was patient, understanding and had his own way of doing things. He never showed the slightest annoyance whenever he did not get responses the way he anticipated. However, on the second day, the group slowly participates in the activities.

the facilitator that inspired me is my football coach. He is always stern towards us when it comes to training for an important match/gams. but before the game/match starts he will always give us words of encouragement and he would always say that 'win or lose it doesn't matter as long as we give our all'. His words of encouragement always motivates me.

The facilitator was an instructor from my obs experience. She constantly encouraged us to voice our thoughts and opinions and helped us by leading by example , such as voicing her own opinions and asking everyone questions so everyone had a chance to share

as a freelancer, i meet different trainers/facilitators/mentors from different company. those that stand out and inspire me are those who are able to always ensure the students are engage, handling the troublemakers well and rarely ever need to be strict as the students listen and react.

I do not have any specific facilitator. However, I have gone through many camps in different capacities. I have met with different variety of trainers which inspires me to be like them or a better version. (Clement)

My OBS and Sec 3 camp facilitators are very friendly, and they also shared how their life is going which makes them easier to relate to and get along. They know how to build rapport with their participants and facilitate an excellent and enjoyable camp experience for me.

An educator that inspired me would be my ex-coach during my training days. I always looked forward to trainings as he is motivated and super dedicated to the sport. He showed good qualities of a coach and made sure that his athletes are always being treated with respect and fairly.

He gave a lot of advices and it was super inspiring! We never once felt demotivated and we were always on the go! (Jasmin)

Back during my outdoor camp in secondary school, my facilitator inspired me in a way where she ensured that everyone was included in the activity and not feel left out. She showed me that being weak at something does not mean that I won't be able to contribute and learn at all as they are always other ways to do so.

Back in secondary school outdoor camp, I got into a conflict with another class member, and it led us into a physical fight. The instructors came rushing and my instructor pulled me aside and stopped us. He brought me aside and calmed me down first before even saying anything. He asked what happened and actively listened to my concerns and anger. Even though I displayed such a negative behavior, he made me reflect on my actions and asked me on what I can do when faced with such situations. Instead of scolding me or leaving the matter with my school teachers to handle, he was there to listen and help me in reflecting on the experience and what I can do moving forward which was a first for me and that actually inspired me. Mr Afiq is my role model. Understanding his backstory definitely inspired through his personal experience to develop himself. It may not be related to the outdoors but his personality of finding what is comfortable to him( outdoors) is what drives me to try and find my peace and comfort in doing what i do.

Mr Afiq has his own ways in encouraging the class to be fun and very engaging. he interacts with his students as if he was one of them, this makes alot of people look up to him because of how bright his personality is in engaging students to further improve on themselves
