The Compromise of 1850 was a series of five bills passed in order to quell the issues regarding slaves in the North and the South. They were written by Henry Clay in September of 1850. Whereas the Missouri Compromise made the amount of slave states and free states equal, the Compromise of 1850 disrupted that balance, placing the Northern free states in the lead regarding amount. The North received the admittance of California as a free state, prohibited slave trade in Washington D.C., and that Texas lost the boundary dispute with New Mexico. But since Texas lost the dispute, the South received ten million dollars. They also received no slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico, and they were allowed to have slaves in Washington D.C.The best deal that the South got in this compromise was the Fugitive Slave Act.

Charles Sumner made a speech titled "Crime Against Kansas" in which he bashed slavery supporters among which was a relative to Senator Brooks. Extremely offended Brooks planned to challenge Sumner to a duel but then decided that a duel was for gentlemen, therefore too high an honor for Sumner. In its place, Brooks decided to publicly humiliate Sumner by beating him in the House of Representatives. Brooks had a gold tipped cane which he splintered in half while thoroughly beating Sumner to unconsciousness.
This display of violence was praised in the South while the North was horrified. It increased resentment between states and demonstrated the rash emotions which lead to an outbreak of war.

The situation began with a slave whose owner had died will in the slave free part of the Union. This slave (Dred Scott) then went to court petitioning for his freedom. The court denied his request with the decision that slaves were not people therefore did not earn the constitutional rights. This was done to postpone the discussion of slavery in the Southern territories but it took a negative effect on the Northern states. They were ignored by the compromise of 1850 and this new ruling further infuriated the anti-slavery supporters and built on more tension to the rising tide of the Civil War.

The Republican party arose from controversies over the Missouri Comprise and then the later Compromise of 1850. These helped formulate the party's main focus on slavery and the abolishing of it. The New Republican party most likely chose Lincoln as their presidential candidate due to his fame in previous year from a series of debates with Stephen Douglass. These debates focused distinctly on the slavery controversy and though Lincoln lost the senate seat it is probably why he became the president. Lincoln's election infuriated many southern states who thought he would abolish slavery so they decided to succeed immediately. It began with South Carolina then continued on through Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.

#3 The Kansas-Nebraska Acts & Bleeding Kansas (Nari Mathis)

Stephen Douglass believed that states should be able to choose whether they're free or not, instead of being based on popular vote inside the state boundaries. He presented this idea to Congress as the Kansas-Nebraska Act, finally passed on May 30, 1854. By approving this bill, the Missouri Compromise in turn was repealed, angering the Northerners more. To try and stop the bill and become even, abolitionists rushed to the Kansas and Nebraska territories in order to get the popular vote for free land, but Southerners already obtained most of the land for cotton farming. Along with their slave count, this boosted the amount of votes to make these slave states. The abolitionists were furious, so they made their own campaign called the Free Soil campaign. The members of this operation later became part of the Republican party. Along with the angered Northerns, John Brown took action and rounded up the Northerners to attack the Southerners, especially in Kansas in an attempt to quell slavery. John Brown's efforts were later known as Bleeding Kansas.

John Brown, the same man who started the Bleeding Kansas conflicts, later went on to attack Harper's Ferry, a small town in Virginia. He intended to start a slave rebellion, but due to poor planning it ended up in disaster. On October 16, 1859, John Brown and 18 other recruited men marched into Harper's Ferry intending to take over the main federal building and commandeer the town. Then once secure, he would send out scouts to collect slaves from the nearby plantations, hoping they would join their cause and begin a rebellion. Unfortunately, none of the slaves wanted to join him, and soon enough Robert E. Lee arrived and arrested him. John Brown was later hung on December 2, 1859. Although John Brown didn't have a large rebellion like he planned to, there were some long lasting effects that increased tensions between the Northerners and Southerners. Abolitionists in the North thought that John Brown was a martyr and his efforts were justified but Southerners saw his as a killer to be feared and that their plantations and families wouldn't be safe from others like him.
