He used 2 strains of bacteria for this called R and S. The R strain formed colonies of related bacteria and had a rough appearance as well as it did not cause sickness when injected into the mouse. The S strain formed colonies that were rounded and smooth and had a sugar based coat which prevented bacteria from getting into the immune system of the mouse. The outcome is that the mouse got pneumonia and died.

By: Jessie & Kenzie

Fredrick Griffith was a British bacteriologist, he conducted several experiments using Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria (pneumococcal disease) and mice. While Griffith was conducting these experiments he wasn't trying to identify the genetic material he was trying to find a vaccine. He used two strands of the bacteria known as R and S. The R strand was grown in a petri dish, and formed colonies that were rough and well-defined, the R strand did not cause a sickness. The S strand made colonies that were more rounded and and smooth, because of the smooth coat it fooled the immune system and it became capable of causing disease, and later the mouse injected died from the disease.

When Griffith tried to develop a cure for pneumonia he discovered transformation. By observing the effects that two types of bacteria (streptococcus pneumonia) had on mice, he saw that they had the ability to change each other. When the S type bacteria was injected into a mouse in would develop pneumonia and die. While a mouse injected with the R type would not develop pneumonia. When the S type bacteria was heat-killed then injected into a mouse the mouse would not develop pneumonia. Then again when he injected both the R type and the heat-killed S type the mouse would get pneumonia and would die. It was that discovery that led him to believe that information was transferring from one type of bacteria to the other, and that information transformed the bacteria.
