The first real advertising took place with the rise of journalism in the 17th century. The first advertisements promoted books and medicines.

In the 19th century the French newspaper La Presse introduced paid advertising in its pages, allowing it to lower its price, increase the numberof readers and make higher profits.

In the 1950s most of the advertising, was print-based. The ads had a simple pictures with a lot of details about the product and a slogan at the end. Emotional values like friendship and love started to be included.

In the early 60s there was too much supply and not enough demand. Advertising became modern and created messages that made ads more tempting.

In the 70s consumers felt manipulated by ads. There were still outdated ads. Working women disliked ads showing women as housewives and felt that most advertising was negative for them, holding them back from independence. Moreover educationists complained of manipulation in young children's advertising. Towards the end of the 70s ad campaigns focused on freedom, health, equal rights and ecology.

In the 80s the advertisers experimented on how to hold consumer's attention, invade their memory and change their beliefs.

In the 90s all agencies had a team of research psychologist. Advertisers discovered that brain activity is higher during new commercials. Colors were used to associate products with moods and feelings.

Today ads are multimedia and very technical. Pitch statements used are still questions because the consumer stops and thinks. The consumer is complimented and praised for having chosen the product. They think the company understand and appreciate them.
