The Lorax is looking out the window from the safety of his home as Hurricane Irma barrels through the state of Florida, in early September. Hurricane Irma was a category 5 hurricane with wind speeds up to 185 miles per hour. It was the worst hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Hurricane Wilma. Resulting in more than $62 billon dollars in damages. Many can agree that it is difficult to deny that Irma and other hurricanes of 2017 may be a side effect of climate change, as ocean temperatures rise, it is becoming favorable conditions for a hurricane to form and strengthen.

The Lorax is visiting the Loxahatchee Everglades on a calm fall afternoon. Loxahatchee is an eco-tourism business here inParkland but is also a wildlife reserve. Writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas referred to this tropical wetland as the "River of Grass", to describe its sawgrass marshes, swamps, marine ecosystem etc. Draining and devloping the Everglades for agricultural use started in the late 19th century as a push for progress and expansion. Now the Everglades is a part of the UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, who believe "the idea that the Everglades is a heritage site for the entire planet and has universal value." -(http://www.evergladesairboattours.com)

The Lorax is out in Marjory's Garden checking out the solar panels. For the garden, the solar panels are a way to be completely independent of Stoneman Douglas's power. Solar panels absorb sunlight to generate heat or electricity, using a renewable resource as a source energy instead of something like fossil fuels. These panels can help the garden reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the environment. "When you use renewable solar energy to meet your energy needs, you reduce the demand for electricity from your utility. As a result, your utility plant emits less carbon when producing the power needed to meet customer demand." -(https://www.energysage.com/solar/why-go-solar/protect-the-environment/) Less emissions into the atmosphere leads to cleaner air, water, and soil.

The Lorax noticed an odd contraption out in Marjory's Garden, and later found out that it was a hydroponics system. Hydroponics a method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Depending on how the system is built, a hydroponics system can grow up to several times more crops in the same space than the traditional farming method, it not only saves space and soil, but water as well. "Hydroponics uses less water than soil growing - in some cases up to 90% less water than traditional soil-based agriculture."- (http://www.gyostuff.com/Why_Hydroponics_.html)
