More studies are demonstrating the effectiveness of a device called a peanut ball in helping mothers to labor. The peanut ball is like a birthing ball except it is has a smaller circumference in the middle. It can be used to position mothers in ways that help to open the pelvis and allow the baby to descend more easily. This assists with labor progression. The peanut ball is especially effective for mothers who are confined to bed with an epidural. The peanut ball is used between the mother's knees while she lies in a lateral position to help the pelvis open.
