His father died before he was born and his mother moved to England and left her children in the care of relatives. In 1682 he went to Trinity College. When he finished his studies he moved to England. In England he worked in the politician Sir William Temple, but Swift later moved back to Ireland and in 1694 he became a priest in a church near Belfast. He then moved back to Dublin and became the dean of St Patrick's Cathedral. During this period Swift wrote in the satirical style for which he became so famous. In his writing he defended poor and exploited people, and mocked the rich and powerful. Swifts' most famous novel, Gulliver's Travels, was immediately successful when first published and is still popular today. The story is told by Gulliver himself and every journey he makes ends with his ship being wrecked or attacked by pirates. Each time this happens Gulliver finds hmself in a strange land with even stranger people. Many times Gulliver is in danger and risks his life, but he is always savedGulliver's travels is still popular today because young and adults readers enjoy it, This is because it can be enjoyed on many different levels: as a young reader's fantasy story about travel and adventure and also as a political satire for adults, criticising governaments and leaders. Gulliver can never resist the temptation to leave home and travel on the seas another time. All these ingredients make the book a classical which people are never tired of reading.
