A Public Health Service social psychologist developed the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explain why so few individuals were engaging in illness prevention and detection programs, according to the Theory at a Glance. The Public Health Service , for example, was dispatching mobile x-ray equipment throughout communities to provide free chest X-rays in order to detect any infections. The Health Belief Model is depicted above because, for example, if a patient has a fever, coughing, and chest discomfort and believes they have tuberculosis, the only way to diagnose it is through an x-ray. To conclude, the HBM is an excellent fit for resolving problem behaviors that cause health risk since it focuses on health motivation.

Smoking is a common example used when explaining the theory of planned behavior along with drugs. This photo is related to this theory because before someone starts smoking they always have attitudes towards it such as what we think of smoking. Following this is the subjective norm, which is what our peers think of this behavior and their attitudes (do they like the idea of smoking or not). Lastly, the perceived behavioral control is the way we can put self-control on ourselves for carrying out the behavior, like our will power to not smoke. This then leads to intentions and carrying out the actual behavior.

Going to the gym is a good example for the theory of planned behavior, which is a theory that connects beliefs or attitudes to a person's behavior. In this theory a person starts off with their intention or behavior; for this example it is to start going to the gym to lose weight. Then there are three constructs which begin with the person's attitude which, for this example they may be nervous or anxious. Next, we have the subjective norm, which focuses on what those around the individual think. Some of their peers may be supportive or not. The last construct is perceived behavioral control, which is if the person believes that can control the behavior. In the example, the individual believes they are able to go to the gym and lose weight. These three constructs are able to give the individual a "push" to perform with the behavior chosen.

The Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) is an explanation of how one takes a decision to take an action. It focuses on the psychological processes within their own. The picture I chose represents how one can decide to take action and eat their calcium in order to prevent themselves from getting Osteoporosis. The first step of PAPM is being unaware of the problem. In this case, it would be about someone not being aware of calcium preventing osteoporosis. The second step is being unengaged about the issue. In this case, it would be that the person is aware of calcium preventing osteoporosis, but not engaging with it. The third step is when the person is deciding on whether they should take action; which would be if the person is going to begin eating more calcium. The fourth step, which does not always occur, is when the person decides to not take action. In this image, the person would be deciding to not eat more calcium. The fifth stage is deciding to actually take action, the person would be deciding to eat more calcium. The sixth step is acting, which would be to start taking calcium. The final step would be maintenance, which would be to continue eating calcium. In this case, the person would constantly monitor their diet and ensure that they eat their calcium on a daily basis.

2. In order to depict the concept of being unaware of an issue, I decided to use a picture of an overweight man eating donuts on a couch. I feel that this photo is related to this concept because this man may be unaware of how his health behavior and status may put him more at risk of developing diabetes, or other health conditions related to obesity. He seems unaware of the health consequences that can arise from living a very sedentary lifestyle. Being unaware of an issue is the first stage of the Precaution Adoption Process Model. A good next step for him would be to become more aware of the issue and to decide to act on it in order to improve his overall health and well-being. Performing the actual actions, such as engaging in physical activity and eating foods that have greater nutritional value, is also important. Maintaining these actions is what will make a difference, to see results and long-term health benefits.

The social cognitive theory describes the factors that influence the changes in an individual’s behavior. These factors may include self-efficacy, goals, and outcomes. Self-efficacy is a concept that describes the perception of one’s ability to accomplish a goal. These factors are constantly reinforced by interactions and observations that can alter behavior. This picture is a great example of representing the theory. It shows people’s interactions through emojis suggesting that positive or negative reactions may impact their self-efficacy and therefore their behavior. For example, the woman in the picture has a heart emoji over her head while having a conversation with a guy. This shows that she is responding positively and enjoying his company, which can affect his self-efficacy because he may feel more confident or joyful from her reactions. Due to the woman’s response, this may help him feel more confident in his ability to reach his goals. Overall, social reinforcements can lead to self-efficacy that will ultimately impact behavior.

The transtheoretical model is often used to understand and describe the stages of behavioral change. The main components of the transtheoretical model are broken down into the 5 stages of change. These stages, in temporal order, are: Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance. The picture I've chosen showcases either the action or maintenance stage, depending on what stage of behavioral change the person is in. The picture shows a man wanting to change his behavior in order to become more fit and healthy. In the picture, the man is currently taking action to change his behavior by running on a treadmill, which is an effective form of cardiovascular exercise. The man may also be in his maintenance stage because this stage of the transtheoretical model involves consistently performing the same actions in order to avoid a relapse of unwanted behavior.

Theory of Planned Behavior: Women getting screened for Breast Cancer

An example of theory of planned behavior is women getting screened for breast cancer. Theory of planned behavior suggests an individual uses personal attitude and opinion with influence from subjective norms to affect their actions. This theory begins with a persons intention. For this example, a person would want to get a breast exam/screening to ensure they are at optimal health and are not at risk for breast cancer. A persons attitude can be affected because their results aren’t known prior to completing the breast exam. Additionally, subjective norms come into play which could affect the individual getting screened. Some individuals attitudes regarding breast screenings can be negative and impact the way the person who is getting screened thinks/behaves. On the other hand, another subjective norm could be getting regular checkups are supported by society and by healthcare professionals. All in all, their behavioral intention is the intent to get regular exams and breast screenings. Their attitude is getting these regular breast exams/screenings are good for their health. The perceived behavioral control is that there are many places to get these screenings done and it is in an individuals control.

Alcohol consumption is an example that represents the concept of the Theory of Planned Behavior. The theory of planned behavior explains health behavior over which the individual has control. As for alcohol consumption it starts with the individual's behavioral intention; in this case an individual might want to go drink with a couple friends to have fun or destress from the busy week they had. The following is the person's attitude which a person may be excited to go have a couple drink with their friends. The second comes the subjective norm (the belief of whether other people approve or disapprove of their behavior) in which the individual consuming alcohol may feel that their family is against drinking because it is bad for their health. Lastly, the perceived behavioral control is if the individual consuming alcohol knows that they can control their consumption and knows their limits of drinking in order to drink safely.

The diffusion of innovation is the idea of how products and social practices are expanding from one generation to another. Lasik surgery started to become popular in the early 2000s where it is the advancement of laser technology in order to assist in vision correction. Most people use Lasik surgery to improve their eyesight which in turn would have them no longer wear glasses. Lasers are constantly improving, making the procedure safer than when it first came out while having the effects last longer as well. The surgery is able to fix vision for people with farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism.

Based on the Social Cognitive Theory, a change in health behavior can be influenced by one's goals, outcome expectancies, and self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, in particular, refers to an individual's belief in their ability to work towards accomplishing success despite any difficulties along the way. Often, the idea of a big goal can come as stressful to tackle as there are so many steps and factors involved. Therefore, breaking down a goal into smaller steps can improve one's self-efficacy towards accomplishing success. Especially because behavior change does not occur over the span of one night, taking these small steps ensures progress towards one's goal. The image above represents this process, with each step of the staircase serving as an objective towards reaching one's goal.

Whether its studying for a test, planning out your diet, or to stop smoking or drinking alcohol, preparation is the first thing to do. Part of the transtheoretical model includes many different types of stages that leads to a behavioral changing process. There are a total of five stages such as precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The image I have chosen is to explain preparation and how it is the way to take action within a certain amount of days, typically thirty days, and have some behavioral steps in this direction. We prepare for things in life all the time such as planning out a diet to make our selves be healthy and happy; it triggers our behavioral change. Patients who plan out their diet are preparing themselves to eventually take action and improve their health; they write down their current weight, what they have eaten throughout the day, and what they should purchase to try something new. This image explains the steps to prepare and change your diet, you plan and strategize to move onto the next stage which is action.

Observational learning (modeling) is the behavioral acquisition that occurs by watching the actions and outcomes of others' behaviors which offer credible role models who perform the targeted behavior. This picture is related to the concept by observational learning since observational learning will be discovering that happens through noticing the conduct of others. It is a type of social realizing which takes different structures, in view of different cycles. In people, this type of learning appears to not need fortification to happen, however all things considered, requires a social model like a parent, kin, companion, or educator with environmental factors. Especially in youth, a model is somebody of power or higher status in a climate. In creatures, observational learning is regularly founded on old style molding, in which an intuitive conduct is inspired by noticing the conduct of another (for example mobbing in winged creatures), yet different cycles might be included too.

An example of the Social Ecological Model is whether a person is healthy or unhealthy. As an individual, you can make decisions for yourself that impact your health whether it is eating healthy or exercising. In the microsystem, the people around you like your family directly influence whether or not you become healthy or not. If your parents put you in a sport as a young kid and make you eat healthier, it is more likely to influence a person to continue doing them. When a person grows up with a family who doesn't exercise or eat healthy, it makes the individual more susceptible to being unhealthy just by the influence of their family or friends. As you continue to go up the levels of systems in the model, it increases the amount of influences you have on a person's life. Whether or not you are healthy is a simple example of the social ecological model, but there are many more!

The Art of Gua Sha scraping in the past was described to help "scrape away illness"; today, it is used to increase and activate blood circulation around the body and face. This technique is widely known in the Asian community but it was not until recently during quarantine that people of all races assumed they discovered a "new" treatment to help slim down their faces. Through TikTok, people began to take interest and participate in this technique for its beneficial properties without truly knowing the history of the traditional medicinal benefits.

Source: http://en.chinaculture.org/info/2013-04/25/content_456628.htm

As seen in the image above, adolescents and young adults are more likely to consume substances in social settings. The relationship, community, and social factors significantly influence the individual into consuming substances of abuse due to a sense of peer disapproval. By experiencing these emotions, the individual feels pressured to consume the substances every time they find themselves in these social settings. The more relationship, community, and societal factors influence the individual, the more the individual is at risk of developing substance abuse, lowering their risk of abuse, or eliminating their substance abuse. Regarding substance abuse, the social-ecological model can work in either direction because peer relationships highly influence good and poor behaviors.

An example of the Theory of Planned Behavior is, waking up early. The theory of planned behavior is best explained through an individuals attitude towards a certain task, hobby, and or even responsibility in connection with how the said individual’s perceives what peoples attitudes are towards these certain tasks, hobbies, and or responsibilities, and finally how the said individual acts in accordance to the behavior. To start we notice the attitude of a individual waking up. The individual would choose to wake up early to get some breakfast and get a head start to a day, but there is also the opportunity of sleeping in and getting more sleep. Following this would be the subjective norm, which could be that the rest of the family enjoys waking up early and the said individual would be able to get quality time with the family enjoying breakfast together and getting ready together as a unit. Finally, is the perceived behavioral control. If the individual believes that they can wake up early every morning, then they will try their best to wake up early since they have a strong belief that they are able to do it.

This image shows a student learning a new language by practicing writing the romanization of the work as well as the characters. Social cognitive theory is a dynamic where personal and environmental factors as well as human behaviors influence one another. In the social cognitive theory, the concept of behavioral capacity states that to perform a behavior, a person must know what to do and how to do it. In this example, the student could be taking language classes with other peers and practice a new language by only speaking the new language when inside the classroom. The teacher could have made this rule so that the students are continuously practicing and using their skills to enhance their knowledge. Therefore this image shows how to do something (learn a new language) and what to do (practice writing the language). In summary, the challenge of learning a new language relates to social cognitive theory by having an environment where there are rules in place for someone to improve their skills in that certain language by practicing writing, speaking with peers, and having a support system to achieve this skill.

Pre-contemplation comes before contemplation which is the next stage in the model. Pre-contemplation is also one of the first stages in the Transtheoretical Model. The picture I chose is a girl reading her book and looking away with a deciding face. She is faced with a pre-contemplating factor. I thought this picture fit best with the term because in the pre-contemplation process an individual is faced with taking charge or not. Usually, in this stage a person does not take any action or try to even do anything for the future to better themselves or their habits.

The image above is of two young girls using the latest iPhone 13. The Diffusion of innovation theory addresses how new ideas, products, and social practices spread within an organization. I chose this image because it represents how the girls are early adopters of technology, who most likely have wealthy parents. The first iPhone ever was first introduced in 2007 and today more than 1 billion people own iPhones. As technology keeps advancing, even the youth want high technology phones.

The diffusion of innovation theory outlines the pattern and rate at which new ideas, behaviors, and products are implemented into society. This theory can be characterized into 5 categories which are: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. The picture I picked shows early adopters of the sell phone. Early adopters are considered to be the first group to try out a new product before it becomes accesable to the general public. So in this example the early adopters would have been rich individuals who were able to purchase these phones

The diffusion of innovation theory is a theory that explains how as time passes, an item, product, or idea grows and spreads in a particular population or even social system. The image above is a social media platform called TikTok. TikTok is an app that allows users to be creative by offering tools for their short videos like music, filters, text, and other features that seemed to captivate the attention of many individuals, specially Gen z. TikTok was created in 2016 and quickly began to grow in popularity. It is now one of the most downloaded apps, according to Brandastic. During the lockdown, TikTok went viral because more and more people were becoming familiar with the app, specially because it has a feature where you can share videos with your friends or family. Hence TikTok is a great example of the diffusion of innovations theory, showing how something new can grow quickly and spread in a particular population.

https://brandastic.com/blog/what-is-tiktok-and-why-is-it-so-popular/

Social Cognitive Theory - Self-Efficacy

The social cognitive theory is an ongoing process that describes how people's behaviors are influeced by environmental factors, personal factors, and human behaviors are influenced of each other. According to the SCT, since these factors are dependent of one another, self-efficacy can play a huge role in allowing one to "feel" as if they are capable of accomplishing a goal whether or not there are difficult obstacles in their way. This concept of self-efficacy is one of the main factors that will affect health behaviors. It is the confidence in one's own ability to take action and undermine any obstacles in their way. This photo depicts self-efficacy in that it weighs the same person but holds the weight of confidence as a value. On the left side, the person is very confident and finds themselves very happy because they allowed themselves to achieve their dreams by overcoming the obstacles that were in their way. The right scale indicates the person with low self-efficacy therefore leading him to not be able to accomplish their goals and dig themselves a deeper hole because they feel unsuccessful due to their own feelings.

Some people believe they won't get the flu, so they decide that they will not get a flu shot. This decision may be influenced my society around them or others beliefs, but it can immensely affect their health. Although they believe they can not get the flu, this can be false and they can become immensely ill; perceived susceptibility.

The social ecological model explains how health is conceptualized and focuses on the things that could affect ones health. The social ecological model understands health to be affected by the interaction between individuals and also groups and social surroundings. As shown in the image, substance abuse can be a behavior that the social ecological model helps one understand. The surroundings of a person in a party or gathering can influence them to use substances as it is what is in the environment and what those of the same age are doing. Being that a person is in that surrounding they are more likely to feel pressured into using a substance. The social surrounding of the image shows how the environment can be the reason a person would use a substance. The people around them, the social setting, and also the pressure that the individual feels amongst them. The social ecological model shows the relationship that affects ones health as substance abuse can have a negative impact on ones health. The social ecological model explains the relationship which interactions around people can have a negative or positive impact on ones health.

I used this photo because people have different views on whether or not it is important to wear condoms. The use of condoms can be seen with most of the constructs of the health belief model. If a person wants to have sex with a complete stranger they can have perceived susceptibility which means they are aware they can contract a STD because they do not know the sex life of the other person. Perceived severity is a person who knows that contracting an STD from not wearing a condom can be serious and life altering. Perceived benefits may be someone who does not want to have kids and feels like the best way to prevent that is to wear a condom. Perceived barriers are people who may not want to buy condoms or spend money on them.

The individual factor can help us understand the victim or the abuser. Examining the relationship of those that may influence this behavior can be a helpful prevention strategy. In addition, the community and social relationships such as the environment one surrounds themself in can also help when trying t prevent this behavior.Lastly, societal can help. understand what in society might inflicting this behavior. This theory is helpful when trying to come up with prevention strategies.

The concept that I chose is exercising. Exercising is related to the transtheoretical model as a person who wants to change their lifestyle habit will have to go through the stages of change model. For example, a person has to go through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance in order to change their lifestyle. As a result, a person will go through these five phases in order to change their lifestyle from one that doesn't exercise to one that exercises.
Reference

Tipane, J.

The Precaution Adoption Process Model attempts to explain how a person comes to decision to take action. There are seven stages, it starts with the lack of awareness and goes through the stages to become more aware, making the decision whether to act upon it, and maintaining the behavior. I chose this picture because this woman is taking preventative measures for diabetes by exercising and eating right. This individual is aware of how not exercising and eating unhealthy can do to her body in the future. She is making the decision to act and be consistent to maintain a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
