Post-Impressionism

In the late 1880s, a group of artists felt the need to create a new artistic style that was able to let everyone see what they really were feeling inside. These artists were looking for a deeper meaning, something that held more passion, more emotions and more inner expression. That’s how the french movement Post-Impressionism, a term coined by the English critic and artist Roger Fry, took shape and went from 1886 to 1905. Post-impressionism, like the Impressionism art movement, is considered to be one of the earliest avant-garde movements of the 19th century. Even though post Impressionism artists used impressionistic techniques, they aimed to take that style to a whole new level. Post impressionism artists used vivid colors, which were somewhat unnatural, with thick brushstrokes, real life objects and sometimes even geometrical forms. Color was used by these artists to express what they felt about the world they lived in. They wanted to make art an emotional experience with the use of symbolism and captivating forms and that’s why some people think Post-Impressionism is an exaggerated form of Impressionism. Post-Impressionism didn’t have rules, in fact post impressionism artists didn’t have anything in common and had their own style. Attempting to attack impressionism, the Post-Impressionism art movement seems to be divided into two major streams of thought: the more structural, formal, nearly scientific design style of Georges Seurat with his dot theory, later known as pointillism and Paul Cezanne, who concentrated his practice on the research of the color planes, while on the other, the art of Gauguin, van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec emphasized the expression of emotions and sensations through light and color. Post-Impressionism obviously influenced modern art, which is quite interesting since, at that time, Post Impressionism works were rejected and people seemed to despise that style.

Beyond the Impression

The most famous artists of this period and the ones that you’ll find in this exhibition are Paul Cezanne, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh. To make sure you have the best experience ever, we divided this exhibition in 6 rooms, in order: Portraits, Landscapes, Still Life, Leisure, Everyday Life and Escape from the society.

Seurat was the first who started experimenting with color even before the first signs of Post Impressionism started to appear. It was the lack of lines and detailing of Impressionism that led him to Post Impressionism. His technique is known as pointillism, even though he preferred to call it divisionism. Paul Cezanne, on the other hand, replaced objects with geometrical forms. He also brought still life back, which hadn’t been in someone’s painting for over 300 years. Although his personality was a little troubled, Vincent van Gogh moved further away from the Impressionism ideas than Seurat and Cezanne did. His masterpieces, like Starry Night and Sunflowers, are well-known by everyone who loves or doesn’t love art. Both van Gogh and Paul Gauguin rejected the ‘abominable error of naturalism’ in favor of a more personal, spiritual expression. Van Gogh and Gauguin shared an interest in symbolic content and produced images that were subtracted from their natural appearances, where the artist’s feelings about the subject matter, and his views on the aesthetic consideration of color, line, and form, were the most crucial elements for the creation of their paintings. Toulouse Lautrec, like the others painters was influenced by Japanese art. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicted the Parisian nightlife. He achieved a fresh and completely new effects using lithography. Lithographs were built with the strong outlines and flat planes of color of the Japanese woodblocks. Now you know everything about this exhibition and you only have to enjoy this supernatural experience.
