Self Sufficiency

"Mom says I'm mature for my age," I told them. "and she lets me cook for myself a lot."
Jeannette shows self sufficiency by learning how to cook at the age of 3 to feed herself as no one else would do that for her. Her mother Rose Mary would rather paint than cook for her children saying, "Why spend the afternoon making a meal that will be gone in an hour," she'd ask us, "when in the same amount of time, I can do a painting that will last forever?"

“I think that maybe sometimes people get the lives they want.”
“Are you saying homeless people want to live on the street?” Professor Fuchs asked. “Are you saying they don’t want warm beds and roofs over their heads?”
Some people would rather live on the streets and off the grid than rather conform to society's laws. Rex and Rose Mary walls didn't want to live like the rest of society and didn't want any welfare or handouts from anyone so they lived on the streets where they were free to do anything they wanted.

"while Lori and I were sitting at Grandma's old upright piano trying to teach each other to play, we heard heavy, uneven footsteps at the front door. We turned and saw Dad. He tripped on the coffee table. When we tried to help him, he cursed and lurched at us, swinging his fist".
A major broken promise to Jeannette was when Rex promised to go sober as a birthday present for her but that only lasts for about a month.

"It was so hushed you could hear the nurses' rubber soled shoes squeaking all the way down the hall. I wasn't used to quiet and order, and I liked it. I also liked it that I had my own room, since in the trailer I shared one with my brother and my sister. My hospital room even had its very own television set up on the wall". Jeannette's life at home was completely different than her experience at the hospital. There was no order in her household as no one takes charge and the children are left to fend for themselves. The house was cluttered with paintings and miscellaneous items the walls found on their adventures. At the hospital it was clean and quiet which she was not accustomed to but she liked it.

"There's nine hundred and fifty bucks," Dad said. He opened the plastic bag, and a fur coat tumbled out. "That there's mink. You should be able to pawn it for fifty, at least." I stared at the loot. "Dad," I said. "you guys need this money more than I do." "It's yours," Dad said. "Since when is it wrong for a father to take care of his little girl?"
An example for unconditional love is when Jeannette tells her homeless father that she might have to drop out of college because she doesn't have enough money to pay for it and Rex gives her all of his winnings from poker games and a fur coat that she can sell so she can continue college.
