Rose Mary had the opportunity to give her children food but instead used it to better her self-esteem. It wasn't just the ring, when the kids were going hungry because of no food Rose Mary was hiding chocolate bars from her family and eating them herself. Even when Rose Mary asks Jeannette if she let her borrow a million dollars to she can buy the other half of her brothers land, Jeanette flips out because all those time without food, coal, and plumbing her mother has been sitting on land that’s worth a million dollars. In this picture you can see a lady putting on a diamond ring, which is what Rose Mary did when Jeannette and Brian found the ring.

"Life with your father was never boring." Jeannette and her siblings see everyday with her dad an adventure when in reality they are struggling, when they were living in the desert Jeannette says how she wants to live there forever and Lori say they probably will. Then when the social worker came to talk to Rex and Mary about neglecting the kids, Jeannette gets made at her parents because it just proves how bad her reality is. This picture shows you a glimpse of what it looked liked in the desert.

“Are you saying I can’t take care of my family?” Rex and Rose Mary were never good at providing for their family. They never had enough food, barely got clothes, and didn't have a place to call home. Instead of using the little money they get to buy food or clothes, they buy art supplies for Mary then Rex goes to clubs when he should be looking for a job. By the time Jeannette reaches fifth grade she finally starts to see that her parents aren’t what she imagined them to be, breaking promises, no trust, using them, and having them to rely on the kids when it should be the other way around. In the picture below it shows art supplies and alcohol Rex and Mary would buy with the little money they had.

"We never did build that Glass Castle." "No. But we had fun planning it."Jeanette and Brian begin digging a foundation for the glass castle Rex promised to build for his kids, but the foundation instead becomes a ditch for garbage that the family cannot afford to have picked up, it’s that moment when Jeannette realizes that the glass castle will never be built. In this picture you can see 'The Glass Castle' that was never built.

Throughout the story you can see how the kids come of age, even then they were more of the adults than their parents. Jeannette asked what would happen if they stopped moving and Lori respond with them getting caught. Then Rex did everything in his power to avoid the police force, and Brian still became a police officer even with all the bad influence. Coming of age for Jeannette means breaking ties with her parents and living her own life on her own terms.

Unconditional Love

"Have I ever let you down mountain goat?" “You know if it’s humanly possible, I’ll get it for you.And if it ain’t humanly possible, I’ll die trying.” Those two quote sum up the unconditional love of Rex and Jeannette. No matter how many times Rex disappoints Jeannette throughout her life she always believes him and holds fate in him. When Rex asks what Jeannette would like for her 10th birthday she asked for her father to stop drinking, and he does but only for a short amount of time. This picture is an example of Jeannette holding fate in her father when she was younger.
