During the Industrial Revolution, working and living conditions were horrible. There were many people who wanted to work in the new factories being built, so employers were able to set wages as low as they wanted to. The people working didn't care about having a good wage, as long as they got paid. This would later change as more people realized that they weren't being treated right. These people would work 14-16 hours everyday, for 6 days every week, only to receive a pay of $8-$10 per WEEK, which was approximately 10 cents per hour. Women only received 1/2 or 1/3 of the pay that men earned, and children received even less. The owners didn't care, as they made a profit, since labor was cheaper then. Factories were also not the best place to work, as machinery had no safety precautions, which resulted in many accidents. Workers also had two small breaks, one for lunch, and one for dinner. Labor Unions tried to solve the unfair working conditions. They wanted more pay and fairer treatment. They also did not want any children involved in work because of the dangers involved. These Labor Unions would usually fail because there were many immigrants traveling to the U.S., who wanted jobs, and they would take any available jobs, no matter how the working conditions were. As more businesses began to grow and national markets grew, more people wanted to move to North America. Most people lived in "slums", where 5-9 people lived in a single room. In such a small space, many people became sick, and passed some diseases, which rapidly spread throughout the population, causing many deaths. These were the terrible conditions in which many people had to work in and also live in.

Most of the working and living conditions in the United Sates that were horrible, were cities, the slums, and the industrialized areas. The places that escaped all of these problems were the urban areas that hosted the middle class, which was created by the Industrial Revolution.

The workers who worked at the factories had low wages. This was a problem that angered many workers. Some of the workers would not tolerate this, and they decided to move to different jobs. But this would sometimes still not solve the problems of low wages, bad working conditions, and unsafe working areas. They could have tried to compromise with the owners to get better conditions in their factories, but owners could simply just fire that worker and replace him or her.

This picture is photo graphical proof that children had to work at a very young age. These children had to work for 12 hours, 6 days a week, just so they could earn less than $5 that whole week. This was the same with adults, except that they made more money, but it was still very little.

This also goes along with the political tab. The upper and middle classes were the only classes that had "leisure money". This very much effected the lower class, as everyone in that class had very little money to meet their daily needs.

Only the middle and upper classes had money for comfort use, and most people who are holding a government position have a lot of money. This left the lower class to try and fend for itself, as most owners of the factories, and businesses had extra money, and all they cared for was a profit.

A solution to try and fix this problem back then could have been, for factory workers to go on a strike. A strike is a mass refusal of employees to work, or a work stoppage, which usually happens because of the employees' grievances. If enough employees went on a strike, even the immigrants would notice, causing the owners to panic, forcing them to give the employees better wages, better working conditions, and in the long run, better living conditions. These strikes would be like the Labor Unions, except on a larger scale.

A way to solve the problem if it happened right now, would be to face these problems, legally, such as in a court, and defend why we think that employees need better working conditions, and wages so that it would be a win-win situation. The employee gets what he or she wants, which would be, better working conditions, and higher wages. The employer, or the owner would get more quality work from the employee, since they are now happy, and in good working conditions.
