Mark Penn has spent 40 years leading companies in the advertising, public relations, polling, and consulting sectors. While studying for a bachelor of arts in social studies at Harvard College, he cofounded Penn Schoen Berland, where he served as CEO for nearly three decades. In 2001, he sold the company to the global communications entity WPP. Mark Penn went on to become the chief strategy officer and executive vice president of Microsoft following a term as CEO of the public relations firm Burson-Marsteller.

In 2015, Mark Penn drew upon his years of experience in communications to establish The Stagwell Group LLC in Washington, DC. Under his leadership, the investment advisory group has sought to revolutionize the holding company model by constructing a private equity fund centered on digital marketing entities.

As the firm’s managing partner and president, Mark Penn has championed investments in 17 digital marketing agencies such as Harris Insights & Analytics and National Research Group, a market research organization. The Stagwell Group recently raised $260 million in funding from the global private equity group AlpInvest Partners, bringing its total capital to roughly $500 million. The firm is now on track to earn more than $400 million in revenue in 2018.

Throughout his career, Mark Penn has served as a consultant and chief strategist for numerous political campaigns. During Ed Koch’s successful bid for the role of Mayor of New York City, he developed the industry’s first overnight poll. Penn also worked on the re-election campaign for President Bill Clinton and the presidential and Senate campaigns for Hillary Clinton.

In addition, Mark Penn is the best-selling author of the 2007 book Microtrends: The Small Forces Behind Tomorrow’s Big Changes. More than a decade later, he released its sequel, Microtrends Squared: The New Small Forces Driving the Big Disruptions Today. Penn is also a columnist for renowned publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post.
