Before the outbreak of WWI wars were not fought the same way. For example, WWI was the first time they used planes for combat and flamethrowers. There was also not as much bartering between the U.S. and other European countries besides Germany, whose trading with the U.S. dropped like crazy at the start of the war. Another thing that was different before the war versus after, was the amount of rights women attained. Once women joined in helping with the war, the men saw that they were in fact capable of doing the things they did.

World War I.

Trench warfare is when opposing sides of a war dig down into trenches for protection. In 1914, the opposing sides would be in the trenches for the next four years, firing at the otherside, trying to advance more and more. The three main types of trenches were the front line, support, and reserve. Between the trenches was a place called “no man’s land” and the length of it was 25 yards to a mile wide. They called this place “no man’s land” because if you stepped into this area it was almost impossible to survive.

"TRENCH WARFARE."

The use of aircraft changed battles during WWI because planes were used to transport information at first. In 1912, however, for the first time machine guns were mounted on planes. They were not perfect right away. Some machine guns would take out the propeller of the plane it was mounted on with just one bullet, if the gun was not timed properly. This problem was eventually fixed in 1915 with an invention that synchronized the guns with the propellers. Planes were used to bomb the enemy. This could help the soldiers that were in trenches because the planes could just fly by and bomb the other trench.

"World War I."

Some of the struggles U.S. soldiers faced as they returned back home after the war was PTSD, also known as “shell shock.” They also could’ve been coming home with fewer limbs than they left with because in the trenches, it would be wet and muddy all the time and they could not change into dry socks or boots resulting in them developing a disease known as trench foot. First, their toes would turn a different color, then, begin to go numb and rot. The only cure to trench foot was amputation. Soldiers could also get trench mouth, where they would have an infection in their throat and gums that was extremely painful.

World War I.
