So today's sessions was our solo viewings. I was literally terrified as i have literally changed my solo choreographer yesterday.

Before we viewed everyone's work we were given a task when watching the solo's to think about a question for them.

The first person up was Paige and my question for her was 'How can you make your movement more intricate?'.
Second person up was Cerys and my question was 'How are you using your levels?'

Next was Meg and I asked 'How are you using your projection and focus?'
Lewis was next and his question included 'How are you using your spacing?'

Fifth was Tom and for me, my question for his was 'How are you using your spacials & tempo?'
Ash was next and my question was 'Have you thought about your spacial pathways?'.

Next up, Emma and my question was 'How can you enhance your focus and projection?'.
Chloe, Rosie and Morgan all had the same question which was 'How can they enhance their performance skills, along with projections & focus?'.

This was really beneficial as I can look back when i'm working on my solo and ask myself these questions and include them in my work.

My own feedback from my solo wasn't very much as I only had 2 8's of choreography and it's not much to go on. But from what I showed a question for me is how can I show off different levels of energy.

Today we talked about A Level Solos and tips on how to create it. We have to look at different solos/duets/trios within the style of the practitioners and choose which one we want to do. First task for our next lesson is to research the person we know the least.

Our overall task is to create a solo based on our chosen practitioners approach without using their songs, just similar ones. I have to remember I am not dancing as myself, but as someone in their company.

TIPS :

(Physical)
*En-capture their style.
*Understanding of physical and technical skills.
*How do they train?
*Show that I understand alignment.
*Do they use extension?
*Understanding of rotation.
*Do they like using whole body movements or?
*How do they use weight?
*Locomotion.
*Elevation.
*Balance.

(Space)
*Spacial control.

(Dynamics)
*Are you rhythmically in control - music.
*Performance/Interpretation skills. - Communicate your idea.
*Keep reflection journal.
*3 minutes or no shorter than 2.
*Marked 20/20.

*Put a practitioner on and copy them (feel them).
*Get pictures of dancers - then interpret shapes. (Motif based from photographs).
*Signature moves
-Akram uses culture and Autobiography.
-Richard uses music, theme and variation.
-Bob Fosse use circumstances (whats going on during that time).
-Hofesh Shechter is very floor based.

Today's lesson focused on how we are 'Communicating our ideas?', that being to the audience/examiner.

We individually performed in front of the class and received feedback. Those giving feedback had to think about the dancers SPACE, ACTIONS, DYNAMICS (range of dynamics) and ENERGY.

My feedback for each individual included:

ROSE -
*I can see your stimulus, however how can you show it more?
*Is it enough for an A grade standard?
*Didn't see any performance skills, for example, when she is finding her feet, is she happy? is she excited? is she freaked out? Emphasis it.
*I didn't see dynamics, (emotion through the material).

CHLOE -
* (SPACE) Go beyond your reaching point.
*Dynamics, (the difference between soft and sharp).
*I seen a clear reflection of Akram through her song choice.
* Great musicality.

ASHLEA -
*Great performance skills e.g. focus.
*Great sense of presence.
*Your song choice creates a sense of space.
*Think about your appearance (hair flying everywhere).

TILLE -
*Very messy
*Where is your focus?
*Have you rehearsed this full out?
*You need to apply a range of dynamics.

Unfortunately during this lesson we didn't get round to performing my solo but after seeing everyone else perform and the feedback I gave to them, it really made me think about if I am applying those corrections myself. So I've decided to do some extra rehearsals to see if I am thinking about all those principles.

Soundtracks tend to be moody and tense. Very often the movement looks animalistic (predatory swoops, chimpanzee lopes, lizardy wrigglings) which gives the choreography a fierce dynamic. You can also sense Shechter's background in percussion, as the dancing is often propelled by ragged rhythms. He's also very good at creating a kind of controlled chaos: sometimes it looks as if the dancers are all over the place, but they can snap into formation in an instant.

Shechter often talks about degrees of individual freedom (or lack of it) and you can see that concern in his work. Dancers seem less like individuals and more like beings caught in the crosscurrents of their own animal drives versus the demands of the group. There's a lot of struggle in that dynamic. Although Shechter doesn't go for narratives, he sometimes likes to add his own voiceover, in which he muses on the nature of our existence.

Works I like:
* Shelters
*The other seder
*Uprising

AKRAM KHAN

Khan was born in Wimbledon, London, England into a family from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He began dancing and trained in the classical South Asian dance form of Kathak at the age of seven. He studied with Sri Pratap Pawar, later becoming his disciple. He began his stage career at the age of 13, when he was cast in Peter Brook's Shakespeare Company production of Mahabharata, touring the world between 1987 and 1989 and appearing in the televised version of the play broadcast in 1988.

Following later studies in Contemporary Dance at De Montfort Universityand Performing Arts at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and a period working with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Brussels based X-Group project, he began presenting solo performances of his work in the 1990s.

In August 2000, he launched Akram Khan Company. His first full-length work Kaash, a collaboration with Anish Kapoor and Nitin Sawhney, was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002.

Akran Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artits today. In just over fifteen years he has created a body of woork that has contributed significantly to the arts in the UK and abroad. His reputation has been built on the success of imaginative, highly accessible and relevant productions such as DESH, iTMOi, Vertical Road, Gnosis and Zero Degrees. Khan is also an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells, London.

Khan's dance roots are in kathak and it shows. It's a style characterised by mathematically complex rhythmic footwork, spins, fluid arm and hand gestures, as well as dynamic contrasts between speed and stillness.

His background floods his contemporary work. Sometimes he uses moves directly from kathak, even where he doesn't, his style has a lot of rhythmic interest – the arms circle and slice around the head and torso, and bursts of action and sudden freezes. Khan has also often used speech and storytelling in his pieces.

Kan is a compelling performer with a soloist's command of the stage. As with other distinctive soloists such as Wayne McGregor his earliest group compositions tended to look like refractions of his own presence. Later, he made a trilogy of duets in which he was counterbalanced by a very different presence: Belgian dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in the masterful Zero Degrees (2005), French ballerina Sylvie Guillem in Sacred Monsters (2006) and French film actor Juliette Binoche in in-I (2008). Khan did not dance in his most recent piece Bahok (a collaboration with the National Ballet of China, 2008), and the choreography is consequently more tailored to the diverse talents of his international dancers. He attracts high-profile collaborators, most frequently Nitin Sawhney as composer, but also artists Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley, and writer Hanif Kureishi.

One of Akram’s dance’s ‘Zero Degrees’ is performed by Akram himself and Sidi /larbi Cherkaoui. It is based on an edited text of Khan’s persona; and epic experience on a train journey in India detailing a border crossing. There is movement and pedestrian movement and gesture in the story telling of the text. It is performed as a duet using 2 male dancers, character roles of Khan and his cousin are assumed in part within this section of the dance (story part one-passports). Devices used in this section is Cherkaoui’s synchronisation system. Most of the section is performed in unison and a small element of mirroring and a bit of complementary action is used towards the end.

Aural Setting - Khan and Cherkaoui speak in unison in story part one – “passports”, their tone of voice uses shifts from Khan’s calm recount, to the guards’ strong and authoritative questioning voice. As the emotional content increases, Khan talks with greater speed as he is feeling more out of control.

Physical Setting – A minimal colour of blue/half blue light gives a stark feeling and lighting comes up to illuminate a grey box. Two white sculptures of human figures lay on the floor at either side of the stage, one upstage right and the second downstage left. There are four musicians sat behind the rear gauze wall, being lit from behind revealing their faces in a low but warm glow. Both dancers enter and take up a seated downstage centre, providing a clear focal point in the mass of grey space throughout the section.

Both dancers wear the same style clothing, Thai fisherman style pants and a T-shirt in a different colour. Khan in a Khaki and brown, Cherkaoui in blue and grey. Khan is barefoot whilst Cherkaoui wears black jazz trainers. These costumes are worn throughout the whole piece.

We are introduce to the beginning of the story, Khan and his cousin are travelling at the Bangladeshi/Indian border. It is hot and they are being subjected to a crowded and tense passport check. It is clear that the guards have a lot of power, in number and authority. Khan and his cousin (played by Cherkaoui) talk about the power associated with a passport and its significance to a person’s identity. We learn about their vulnerability when it’s removed from them. The unfamiliar territory makes Khan feel uncomfortable, and although reassured by his more knowledge cousin, they realise that however much they want to regain contact with their passports, they are trapped and powerless in the midst of rules. They accept their loss of control and helplessness, step aside and have to wait out a tense and uncomfortable situation.

Q1. What technique and styles have I used to create my solo?
* Khan's dance roots are in kathak. It's a style characterised by mathematically complex rhythmic footwork, spins, fluid arm and hand gestures, as well as dynamic contrasts between speed and stillness which is something I have installed into my solo with a fusion of contemporary however I am also developing it and adding in the idea of rhythmic footwork.

Q2. What elements of the style are you exploiting in the solo?
*The elements of the style I am exploiting through my solo is the use of spins, fluid arm and hand gestures particularly the arms and hand gestures , as well as dynamic range between speed and stillness. Movements include:
Sufi turns - Fast paced continuous turns on the heel of the foot that can be performed on the spot or traveling.
Chin mudra - One of the key gestures of kathak. The index finger touches the thumb creating a circle and the remaining fingers are splayed. It means wholeness or the feeling of being complete.

Choreographic devices also exploited are:

· Repetition

· Varied tempo, rhythm and dynamic quality

· Change of body parts

· Retrograde

· Accumulation

· Fragmentation

Q3. Are you using traditional choreographic methods?
* I am using Rep from Akram's choreography in 'Kaash', 'Desh', 'Gnosis' and 'Zero Degrees' However, I also have the Idea of creating my own material, using his approach from my own story.

Q4. What styles does my solo use?
*Khan's style has a lot of rhythmic interest, as does my solo. The arms circle and slice around the head and torso, and bursts of action and sudden freezes. Khan has also often used speech and storytelling in his pieces and that is something that I am currently developing.

The text was spoken in a very fast pace to emphasis how the situation all happened very quickly and how everyone rushed in to help. It is all very flustered and high tempo to show the build up of emotions.

The word gesture I used to talk about movements that do not involve carrying eight of the whole body through space. A gesture would be different to a transfer of weight. For example, raising an arm would be a gesture and stepping forward would be a transfer of weight.
Some people also use this word to talk about movements of the body or limbs that express or emphasize ideas, feelings or attitudes in opposition to what would be a movement, considered only in an abstract way.

My gestures will be shown a lot through my text.
At the very beginning on my solo I start downstage left kneeling on the floor with my palms gently caressing on my things with my head down. I sharply lift my head up starting my speech. My right palm reaches up followed by my left showing 10 fingers, then 1 representing the number 11 bore retreating back to my thigh in a bound, quick drive.
There are also moments where right arm friskily comes in line with my shoulder, as my focus twists to my had, my arm starts to snake in a wave motion before my second finger touches my thumb, facing the floor as it rotates up to wards the sky. This was a representation of the quick agility in which speed possesses, it’s energetic which represents energy.

I took a lot of our inspiration from Akram khans work ‘Kaash’ and manipulated in a number of ways. I communicate my stimulus through use of devices such as Tempo and Force. For example taking movements such as lunging to the left side with my left foot forward, arms reaching out at 0 degrees with palms facing up, before snatching the arms to the chest with arms bent at the elbow. I then sharply twist into a turn before suspending the arms up into high space with palms facing forward towards the audience.

With this movement, taken from ‘Kaash’ I do it as fast as I can and then as sow as I can which links into stimulus well as I am varying up the different speeds and energy I can perform it. I also vary the amount of force I use in producing the movement. Doing it with a great deal of strength from beginning to end, then repeating it, with very little force, gently, weakly.

Feedback from solo

I have a lot more content. My movements show components of sharpness and suspension. It is very clear musically and i'm very "on it". My piece is intense and very dynamically rehearsed. My solo is where it should be for the present time, however it is not finished.
I have my dynamics, gestures and rhythm nailed down, now I need to add elements of flow and fluidity.

I completely agree with my feedback a feel that my solo is where it needs to be right now, ready for me to push myself further after Christmas.

On this day I undertook my first Contemporary Technique class at the start of my 2nd academic year at NPTC Neath of Colleges, studying BTEC Dance.
Although I felt comfortable being in the dance studio, I also felt nervous and excited to see what the second year course has to bring.

My lecturer Craig Coombs recently spent his summer training at Laban and was able to learn new things and bring it back to Wales in order to keep his students and himself informed and updated about the current work going on in London.

He stated that he was going to try and take a new approach in teaching us this year in order for us to effectively be 'doing the work' ourselves and not being 'spoon fed'.

We started by learning a new phrase which focused on our intention, use of breath and being able to feel the movement.

When teaching myself and my fellow class mates the new phrase, Craig insisted on the point of only showing us and going through the material a selective amount of times, as his intention was to make us start thinking for ourselves and effectively open up parts of our brain which we haven't quite used before and be more independent.

I found this very difficult and almost wanted to cry (#Don't be a baby) as I consider myself a bit of a perfectionist shall we say and tend to ask a lot of questions when learning new material. I do this to make sure its spot on rather than actually spending 5 minutes trying to figure it out myself.

When performing the phrase I tried to think about where my body 'feels' it should go next rather than thinking about what the next move actually is.
I was surprised in myself on how difficult I found it to just go with what my body was feeling and I definitely consider this to be one of my weaknesses. However, strangely, I do believe that I dance with intention and meaning.

Although I struggled with adapting to the new change within Craig's teaching it has now opened up things that I didn't know about myself and that I am now able to work on. A strength of mine within this lesson was that I was able to not follow anyone although I was struggling with actually getting to the end of the phrase. This showed me that I was able to go with the intention of the task even though half of me wanted to fight against it.

I am now going to use this technique of feeling where my body should go next when creating and developing movement in my own dance works such as my solo and group pieces.

This lesson was a lot more calm, it was calm because I was more informed on what was to come during this lesson.

I went straight into the phrases that we had learnt in the previous lessons with no problems. Granted they were not perfect but I was able to perform and finish them.

Craig gave me feed back on focusing on my use of breathe when performing and my efficiency.
This made me think about my fluidity throught the material with out any stops and starts.

We then proceeded to learn 2 more phrases, I found that I picked up the next phrases far more quicker than the first phrase and I consider this to be one of my main strengths. A weakness of mine in this lesson was the efficiancy of my material.

I learnt that I needed to focus of making sure that the end of one move was the beginning of the next move without having any stops or starts in my material.

Today I focused on oping with the demands of my body and feeling the sense of 'flow'.

We started the lesson with the previous phrases we had learnt and also added on.

We performed the phrases in groups of 4 & 5 and then given feedback. Whilst performing the phrases I tried to focus on making sure that i extended and suspended every movement in order for it to flow into the next movement.

My feedback included that I had a gorgeous sense of performance when performing the material and I consider this one of my strengths when performing.

A weakness of mine is my sense of 'shift'. I need to think 'low' when shifting my weight from one place to the next in order for it to be effective.

My target from this lesson is to go over the phrases for deeper understanding of technique.

We started today lesson with laying on our backs and feeling the pressure of our feet on the floor, exploring the different feelings in our body when we apply pressure to two feet or just one.

In groups we had to make a duet based on the exercise's we have done in previous lessons. My partner Tom Jones and I decided to take rep from multiple phrases we've learnt.

Considering I used to struggle with remembering the exercises as a whole I found it very easy to just extract certain movements and put them together.

Our feedback included that the way Craig has approach his teaching this unit with us has worked for us.

I then went onto the swing exercise with Morgan and we also worked it out on the second side. A weakness for me is my use of breath, especially in this exercise.

This then moved into the corner exercise but just before it I went with Lewis to complete any exercise to warm up for jumps.
Followed was the 4th phrase on both sides.
I felt very conformable with this phrase however the material still isn't quite there.

A target for me is to focus on my breathing whilst performing.

In class today my aim was to focus on my technique within the material.

I went straight into the phrases we had learnt and any material I couldn't remember I just paused and tried to feel a sense of where my body felt like it should go next.

By Craig allowing us to work out the material for ourselves he said it looks a lot stronger this week and I learnt that this strategy is beneficial for our further training and gives us targets to set.

We then looked at 2 new phrases which were actually quite challenging. Craig said we looked like we were struggling but it also looked interesting.

I really enjoyed learning the next 2 phrases as i thrive on challenging myself. A strength in this lesson for me was just being able to listen to and feel where my body should go to. However I need to ensure I learn the phrases ready for the assessment in 2 weeks time and this is my target before the next lesson.

This lesson I focused of the use of push and gravity.

Craig asked us all to think about one question.
"How can you stand out and an individual?"
For me this was all about my risk taking and the depth in which I can push my body to reach into space.

I then performed the phrases thinking about how I can take risks and my feedback was that I had a really nice sense of continuation and cutting of space. This was great for me as I had previously set a target for myself to flow through one movement into the next.

We then learnt a new phrase which focused on a lot of balancing which was a weakness for me as I have weak ankles however in the other phrases i'm getting better with every lesson.

As part of today's session we started with laying on the floor. We had to imagine we were Aliens and how we would move. Imagining that we were new to our body (just like a new born baby) and figure how to get to standing.

I found this task really interesting, it made me think that as an 'Alien' to my body, I wouldn't know to walk on my feet or to use my hands. So I tried to move myself with different body parts and think how they could be broken into twisted inverted movements.
I learnt that this is a good way to create movement, for example developing a simple movement and trying to perform it in an unusual different way.

We then went into creating a piece for the Christmas Show/Assessment.
Me and Tom start the piece off, downstage right with the start of the swing phrase. I follow this through as Tom leaves and I continue the phrase on the right side all the way through till the end with Ash.

I then walk on later to do the phrase on the second side with Chloe.

My target for next lesson is to know the material on both sides.
