The Battle of Lexington and Concord occurred in Lexington, MA April 1775. The British wanted to take control of Lexington and Concord because there were lots of patriot weapons located there, they also knew that John Hancock and Samual Adams, both Colonial leaders were there. The British came with 700 soldiers while the patriots only had 70. One of the parties fired at the other, which caused the British to fire at the Patriots, where 8 were killed. The Patriots ran and told Concord that the British were coming. After the British checked Lexington and found nothing they moved on to Concord and found nothing. The British marched back to Boston and were met with 4000 militia and minutemen lined up on the road—1000 reinforcements saved the British troops from defeat. This marked the beginning of the war.

The Objective of Battle: The British wanted to seize the weapons they heard of in Lexington and Concord and the politicians there, John Hancock and Samual Adams.

People Involved: John Hancock, Samual Adams

General Burgoyne planned to send three armies from different directions to do this, but the other generals changed their plans and did not inform Burgoyne. Because of this, the colonial army had to make theirs in the woods. It was extremely harsh because of the lack of food, proper clothing, and pay, this resulted in 2,500 of the 10,000 soldiers to perish in these conditions. But, two foreigners came to help, Marquis de Lafayette and Baron Von Steuben. Steuben was a German military officer who helped the colonial army train by using a drill system to teach soldiers to move and fight. It also gave the soldiers a sense of pride and purpose. Once the winter succeded, the army emerged as a trained, dangerous force.

Persons Involved: George Washington, Baron Von Steuben, and Marquis de Lafayette.

Goal of the Event: To train the soldier to become an elite army.

A British lieutenant Henry Hamilton, arrived in the Fort Vincennes with 90 British regulars and 200 native allies. Rodger Clark caught wind of this and departed from Kaskaskia in Feb. 1779, with 172 American soldiers, as they approached the army the local French citizens pitied the American cause and did not tell the British they were there. Clark built a barricade around the fort and traded fire throughout the night. On the morning of the 24th of Feb. Clark demanded the surrender of Hamilton and his army, which was rejected, but Hamilton agreed to discuss the terms with Clark. A war party of natives and French entered the town that the Americans were stationed at, they were unaware of the occupation of the town. After a short fight, the Americans captured six and forced the rest to run. After releasing the two French prisoners Clark decided to kill and scalp the men in front of Hamilton. He intended to use mental warfare on the men to attack the British.

Involved People: Rodger Clark and Henry Hamilton.

Goal: To rid the British of the fort.

Serapis was a naval battle in 1779 that took place somewhere in the North Sea.

Captain of the Bonhomme Richard, an experienced sailor with multiple wins against the British Navy, set sail for attacks with a squad of seven ships raiding around Scotland and Ireland for most of the month. On September 23rd, Jones engaged a merchant fleet comprising the HMS Seapis and Countess of Scarborough. Jones was overwhelmed by the Serapis but due to his maneuvering, the battle lasted for 3 and a half hours. Jones and his crew came out victorious, but their boat started to sink. This led him to surrender to the Serapis. A one-man submarine called The Turtle was the first submarine used in combat during The American Revolution. It was made of oak reinforced with iron bands.
