Students are provided with a list of places within the school which they will need to make directional signs for. They choose within themselves which location within the school they would like to do.
Lesson 1 - Find their place within the school and make note of its location. Find a spot where it would be beneficial to place their sign to direct to that location. In the dirt, draw the location of the 'place' and the sign and draw arrows to show the direction to that place.
Lesson 2 - Measure the distance between the sign and the location using a metre calculator device. Note this down to use on the sign next lesson. Then measure using other things available outdoors, e.g. sticks, peers etc.
Lesson 3 (Art) - Design and create their sign using words, symbols and images. Signs will have the local Aboriginal word for the location, the English version of the word underneath and symbols and images that relate to the place. Have the distance in metres on the side of the sign with the arrow.
Lesson 4 - Pick a partner and direct them from the sign to your location. Students can direct them using compass directions, body movements or verbal cues.
Lesson 5 - Families and community members are invited to come and look at the signs created by the class. Have a class & family yarning circle to discuss and share ideas and feedback.

Star - Great overall unit plan. Being able to incorporate families and community is an important aspect of Indigenous culture.
Star - Including another KLA in a unit plan is always a productive use of students time.
Wish - Hopefully the Awabakal Dictionary provides translations for all of the locations. Students may be disappointed if they are unable to use this resource, but perhaps consultation with local Indigenous elders or community members may be able to provide further advice for this?
