Sharing videos of algae blooms and other damage to the oceans caused by humans (corporations and industry) depositing waste and chemicals into rivers, which are carried downstream to the ocean.

Ho’opili: Students read about the history of Wai'anae from the text provided and in their own words write how Wai'anae got its name.

Students research in pairs regarding the history of Wai'anae's name, looking online for information. If there is time, students can ask their kupuna how Wai'anae got its name as a form of research. A discussion could take place comparing stories. 

 

Students could act out a play with characters such as the fish, the stream, the ocean, and man, to show how Wai'anae got its name. 

 

Ho’ohana: HS students build the mini ahupua'a, then improve upon its viability. Students will be challenged to come up with a system that utilizes the waste from the fish as nutrients for the plants. The mini ahupua'a should also be constructed to be durable and long-lasting.

 

Ho’opuka:  High school students, addressing the standards, explain the natural processes that have taken place in the mini ahupua'a. If high school students who had to improve upon the project, they demonstrate how their ahupua'a is superior and sustainable, so that fish and plants survive indefinitely.

 

With more time and community involvement: Students photograph and research beach pollution on the Wai'anae Coast. Students prepare a slideshow/video to present to the community regarding sustainable ways to clean up the beaches.
