Lots of problems can arise from misunderstandings, especially because we live in a multicultural world. By learning and understanding different cultures you understand why people do things the way they do. When you identify with other people, you sympathize with their situations. It also helps people share ideas about how to do things. I do think that people are aware of IK because there are still some cultures that follow the custom’s that was passed on from passed generations. My culture does not have many events that we can call traditional however I did once attend a Zulu ritual of a young girl becoming a women. She has to dance in front of her community wearing nothing but a beaded skirt to show that she is still a virgin and ready to take on the adult world.

Today the 3rd of August is Raksha Bandha, this is where the females (cousin or sister) of the males (cousin or brother) ties a Rakhi (string) for the males and turns a tray with a lamp lit around the males as a prayer for protection and good will, the males then gift the females with anything. 
No, i do not think that many people are familiar with indigenous knowledge, personally i have not heard of this phrase, but now i do understand what it is and would incorporate it into my teaching.

When people misunderstand one another, this can lead to many problems. This is especially true in a world so culturally diverse. By learning about different cultures we are able to understand why people do certain things and be more relatable. In my family one cultural tradition is Christmas which is something that holds true for many other families out there too. It’s a cultural tradition known well from the Christian culture, other than that my family does not have any other notable traditions or cultural events. In my opinion not many people are familiar with indigenous knowledge. To be honest today was the first time that I’m hearing this term, I have heard them separately but never together. However I do believe that is something we know in general but didn’t have a term for.

These sorts of misunderstandings happen at all levels. The business world is full of examples of where companies have ventured into foreign countries and completely failed to understand the local culture.What these sorts of examples clearly show us is how culture can and does get in the way when it comes to how we see others and the decisions we make. Cultural awareness helps us move beyond this. An important learning point, that we must stress, is that being culturally aware is not about compromising your own culture or sacrificing your values or identity for ‘another’s’.It is simply about helping us understand how we can best adapt our approaches, thoughts and decisions to ensure we create positive outcomes in cross-cultural interactions.It is about respecting others’ cultures as well as our own. A tradition I have with my family is when we celebrate christmas. Every year we will have a huge lunch where we have a South African braai, we will go to the same tree lighting and sing carols with our neighbours. But it’s not cultural tradition per say, my family and i don’t have these types of cultural traditions they are more like rituals. Do you think people are familiar with indigenous knowledge? No, in my perspective i’ve only heard this term now so i do not think most people are familiar with this term but i do think they should be as it is a key concept in my opinion.

1. Having knowledge about different cultures provides a wider spread of understanding and helps to avoid misunderstanding and conflicts with others. By having this understanding we are able to be more sympathetic to others.  This all allows for decision-making and problem-solving easier and allows to avoid conflict. 
2.In our culture, we have the performance of baptism which takes place when a child turns eight years old. However, should someone be older and wish to join, they are to be baptized. 
3.I think they are, but do not realize that it is an official term. 3. A selected few people are still familiar with indigenous knowledge, however most people are no longer familiar with indigenous knowledge. This is owing to the fact that everything has become westernized and all that is good is perceived as western while anything inferior is associated with indigenous knowledge. This mentality is a result of colonization and Apartheid. Furthermore in order to survive in the new globalized world parents are choosing to discard teaching indigenous knowledge in favor of teaching modern science technology that will enable their children to have a better life.

It is important for us to know about the different cultures within our land, in doing so we are embracing diversity and promoting equality. Given the history that we have as a country, it is important to have the correct knowledge to ensure that you are not offending or overstepping on unfamiliar ground. It is so easy to be misinformed and it is even easier to say something hurtful to the next person.

 A prayer gathering before and wedding takes place is a tradition that my family has practiced for many years. This is where the family gets together and prays as a family. The prayer entails good wishes, happiness and success for the couple. Everyone gathers in their traditional attire, engages in the program and then eat a meal. This tradition is a way of bringing the family together.

By understanding cultures on a new, investigative level, we can understand our learners in a more pronounced manner that allows for us as educators to better cater to their needs. Without understanding our learners, we cannot possibly hope to improve our own understanding and acceptance of our learners. 
One cultural tradition that my family has is celebrating Easter- our family has developed our own tradition where we go over to the homes of our family members and instead of hiding chocolates, we exchange gifts and have a large lunch. 
In my opinion, neither educators nor other people are aware of the importance of indigenous knowledge, including myself. 2. My family partakes in the religious cultural activity of lent, where for approximately six weeks we refrain from eating certain foods.
