Definition of learning - What is the meaning?
Complex, there is not ‘a one size fits all’.
We are learning all the time - everyday.
Changes in methods and research means we are finding new ways to learn. Practises evolving.
Planning is vital (audience/learners) so that anyone can access learning (value add)!
Learning develops us, changes our opinions, new ideas are formed.

3

A number of factors influence learning
- ability
- motivation
- attitude
- age
- previous experience
- physical well-being

Some of these influences are determined at birth or the environment in which one has been in.
If we are unsure on how people learn, the process becomes an ‘uninformed experiment’ or guessing game which we only get right by luck.

The theories we read are experiments in certain situations and tell us how people learn in those situations. There is a danger theories can be misconstrued as fact and it is imperative to remember theories are not facts but opinions at that present time.

Due to their past experiences, learners in the lifelong sector bring with them feelings about the process of learning together with feelings about themselves and each other.
Therefore it is vital we recognise and respond to those feelings.
Learning theories help us to identify clearly the needs of our learners and how to meet them.
After reflecting on this, we can creatively and carefully plan our teaching to enable learners to understand and extend their knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes in a way that is engaging, inspiring and supportive.
This will help them to achieve their learning goals and overcome any negative attitudes they have towards learning.
