Answer 1.2 Classrooms in my school are not set up to be flexible, but we move desks depending on the activity. In addition, each classroom is equipped with an interactive multimedia board and a PC with the possibility of Internet access. Sometimes, students can use their mobile phones or I-pads but with their own Internet connection, that’s why they are not so keen on using their personal tools.

However, presentation softwares, desk research as far as marketing is concerned, creating treasure hunts are really appreciated by students. Digital tools are important because students feel confident with them rather than with books. According to the student’s Lea

rning Style, digital tools can become a resource rather than obstacle though they can’t be used for all activities.

I have also realized that students are very good at using digital tools, they get lots of information but they need to improve their critical attitude, to distinguish between fake news or real news for example. That’s why I think collaborative learning is useful because searching information in the wide world web, sharing opinions and ideas in group and debating them will be helpful to make them more aware.

Answer 1.3 I use the “circle time” because I think it is very effective. Before starting any activity, I usually provide students with a set of rules and tips, then we discuss about the pros and cons of their performances as a group as well as individual in the group. Even the use of self-assessment practices is a very important resource to promote real interaction between the students and the process they are developing. Moreover, they achieve a much deeper recognition of the weaknesses and strengths they have in the complex process of learning.

I agree with the idea that Technology becomes useful especially when collaborative practices are used because it’s a common and familiar language for them, and they feel more engaged in a project if digital tools are used

In your experience of collaborative learning, is behaviour management and getting students to stay on track a challenge? Do you agree that assessing collaborative learning is particularly difficult, and what are your experiences with this? How do you monitor teamwork? Do you find the methods mentioned in this video (e.g. self- and peer assessment) useful? What about the online tools mentioned?
1.4 Answer
To tell the truth, it’s a real challenge for me to get my students involved and to make them feel engaged in a project. Their main subjects are Business Studies and Law, Marketing, Finance so they are very pragmatic. They want to come to the point as soon as possible and they learn most by being active. They are really demanding and collaborative learning is helpful because it focuses on active participation, but also in managing their behaviour because they should respect assignments and timetable given.

Therefore, learning should be student-focused, not content-focused. This means that when planning for instruction I must consider how my students learn and what methods I can use to facilitate learning, I have never heard about the apps proposed by Anna Laghigna, but I would try them. I think that students need to be offered chances to solve problems and to work with other students to find solutions to problems. Collaborative Learning gives them the opportunity to solve problems and positive skills in a mutual interaction like listening to others, formulating opinion, being accountable and responsible.

Students learn more easily and readily from a peer or a group of peers as well as they assess their presentations better than me. However, both group final report and individual activities should be assessed, not only content but also their engagement and efforts, their accountability and creativity, their being effective.

It is not easy, in the digital era, to collaborate with other teachers for several reasons. Sometimes we are afraid of using technology in today’s classrooms, we are hesitant to change well-known and comfortable methodologies, we don’t have the necessary digital skills required but today students’ needs and wants are challenging our traditional methods of teaching. During our meetings where we plan activities, I often say “It’s time to get in the game and get dirty. Though we are not digital native we can learn by doing”. We can think about what we are doing as we do it rather than leaving our words and wonderful lesson plans on the paper. I think that if teachers get involved in collaborative teaching, students may get involved in collaborative learning even emulating their teachers’ behaviour.

It is also difficult to guarantee the quality of collaboration that takes place between my students because of their different level of knowledge, skills and abilities, they can be more competitive or less, more accountable or less, more responsible or less but, as it was said in the first video of Module 1, the teacher is a facilitator. Therefore, we can give tools and tips on how to work in a group or ensure group is clear on procedure.

There will always be a student eager to learn and others who won’t mind what you say or do, that’s why when it comes assessment, it should be for both individual work, so that you can take into account the individual efforts of each, and group work.

Do you agree about the importance of "speaking the same language", of understanding the same thing under collaborative learning? Do you agree that having collaborative skills is not a personality trait and that you can design learning activities to develop these skills in your pupils? Professor Butler mentions that ‘technology can support new pedagogies that focus on learners as active participants with tools for inquiry-based pedagogies and collaborative work spaces’.

2.1 Answer
Teachers are often role models and if teachers collaborate, students will probably learn how to collaborate. But it is more likely to happen, if teachers know what collaboration is and they use and share a common language to design the learning activities aiming at the development of the specific skill of collaboration. Speaking the same language as if the idea of collaboration were mutually accepted either by teachers and teachers or by teachers and students, as if the language of collaboration found an echo in teachers and students.
I agree that collaborative skills can be developed through learning activities and that technology is helpful. Since most of my students play football or passionate fans of football teams, I am used reading a great football player words like Pelè “A team is not made up of isolated individuals. Nearly always we are attackers and defenders at the same time! Always stay in the game. Don’t be passive. Football is a team game. No one plays alone. Success depends on your whole team being a single unit. There are eleven players and also the reserves helping each other to fight for the same objective.”
In conclusion, a teacher should become a coach for an effective collaborative learning.

What do you think of the 4 major questions presented by Professor Deirdre Butler? Are they useful in helping you design a collaborative learning activity? Have you asked yourself these questions before, when designing collaborative learning activities?

2.2 Answer
The word collaboration has been in my mind since all this began and I have been urged by words such as working together, be collaborative, quality of collaboration suggested by Prof Butler. I’ve tried to find a definition to keep in mind while designing activities, that is “Collaboration is the potential ability of individuals to be more successful, to solve problems and to be more involved in a variety of learning context as a result of working together with other individuals.”

A true collaboration is hard to achieve and the 4 major questions (Are they working together? Do they have shared responsibility? Are they making substantive decisions? And is their work interdependent?) should be considered as street directions not to get lost along the path of designing learning activities.

I often ask the first two questions, but to tell the truth I hardly ask myself the last ones, I have worked with the cooperative method so far.

However, I really appreciate the new inputs in Collaborative teaching and learning, above all focusing on the students that’s why I would design tailored activities keeping in mind the 4Qs

Do you think it is useful in helping you understand the type and quality of collaboration taking place in the learning activities you design? Have you used this or similar rubrics before to help you design collaborative learning activities? What do you think are its advantages and disadvantages?

2.3 Answer
I found the rubric very interesting and helpful to understand the type and quality of collaboration. Though one can feel framed by rubrics they can help to be objective and to design well-balanced activities to favour collaboration. I have used similar rubrics before and they are useful to in case students will question assessment. In fact, if they know criteria in advance, perhaps they will be more collaborative.

What do you find useful or less useful about these scenarios?

2.4 Answer
The template is a cohesive, comprehensive tool that can help me choose what to add and where to place details in their proper place and it allows for unexpected events. I also think that a template can help me if I need to rush things.
Example scenarios have been inspiring and I have already thought how to adapt them, especially Towards City Health, to my context. Actually, I was designing activities related to the Back to school kit: “Consumer Choice” - “Going to school. What’s the most sustainable way?”. It is also useful to think about the role of the teacher, indeed, he/she is required to “(….)rethink their management and teaching techniques. He ensures the project does not take up too much time, that all students contribute, and that students learn how to work independently”

Do you think your assessment of collaborative work sometimes discourages students or encourages competition? If so, how you do think this could be avoided? Is the assessment you carry out brief, clear and timely, and how do you ensure that it is so? Do you have any tips for your colleagues? Does the summative assessment of each student in your school/subject take into account the learning outcomes related to collaborative work (such as project work/results)?
Answer 3.1
There are students who are reluctant when assessment comes at the end of the group activity, others are discouraged and others think that assessment is an incentive. There are students that they don’t want to work instead of some members of the group and they don’t want to be assessed with group evaluations.
However, if you give them simple and clear objectives to achieve in a short time, it is relatively easy to involve them and, then, to notice who's talking, who's not, who seems comfortable, who doesn't. It is also possible to observe whether the natural leaders are in a good position to lead or not, especially when they try to dominate inappropriately and, in this case, formative assessment is suitable.
To get the students more involved it is also necessary to let them create the rules to work collaboratively, but also to give them the opportunity of self-assessment through an evaluation grid to rate each member of the group, or a Presentation rubric with criteria and levels which clearly describe their performance.
I usually propose this Group (on your left) Evaluation Grid I was given years ago but it is easy to use.
Summative assessment is mainly taken into account at the end of the second year at high secondary school because of the compulsory skills assessment whose aim is to assess communication in English or other languages, digital skills, but also focus on social and civic competences, problem solving, teamwork, entrepreneurship.

What do you think about the various assessment methods used by Chrysa to assess her pupils’ collaborative learning? Do you think the questions she asked her pupils were helpful in getting them to reflect on their collaborative skills? What do you think about prescribing peer assessment to pupils of a young age (6- to 11-year-olds)?

Are there special considerations to be taken into account? What about the final question she asks us and our expert to reflect on: do you find it challenging to gauge how best to assess the individual participation of a student in a collaborative activity?

3.2 Answer
I think that Chrysa’s methods were meticulous and fair. A wide range of activities to be assessed in different ways: self-assessment group with questions to reflect on, individual assessment, peer assessment that, I think, can be at least guided with previously agreed criteria. Actually, children are usually spontaneous and truthful, which is a good thing, but they can also be cruel being “too much” spontaneous and truthful.
As far as Chrysa’s questions I think that talking about collaborative learning, not only we assess the individual degree of assimilation and acquisition and the final outcome of collaborative work but we also take into account their approach to learning, their performance and creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking. The last elements can be observed while students are working collaboratively and individually but with different approach and final results.

What do you think about the projects described by Antonio, from the perspective of student collaboration and from the perspective of teacher collaboration? Do you agree with the 7 benefits Antonio associates to assessing collaborative learning? What about the challenges he mentions concerning group dynamics, team management and the time needed to prepare and implement assessment of collaborative learning in the classroom – are these challenges you also face? Antonio mentions the use of collaborative digital tools, reorganising the classroom space and introducing more interdisciplinary teaching and the sharing of materials amongst teachers as useful tips. Do you agree, and what are your experiences of these suggestions?

3.3 Answer
As usual eTwinning projects are involving and carrying them out is like building bridges between young people from different countries.
They are extraordinary events where students become more open minded, approach school subjects with digital tools and with different modus operandi, leaving for a while the usual boring lessons.
Though, after listening to Antonio João Lopes, I thought that, being an ICT teacher, he is more familiar than me with digital tools and digital literacy which are essential elements of his teaching and students are very keen on these activities; then, I had the words “extraordinary events” going in my head, students get excited with new situation
Therefore, from the perspective of student collaboration and the perspective of teacher collaboration, I think that the best situation would be one where teachers were able to carry out collaborative teaching or collaborative learning as part of ordinary teaching routine. I found the seven benefits very interesting. I agree with him as far as the challenges, especially changing the role of teacher, but we have to face them if we want to contain the problem of early drop-outs.
It is also a challenge to involve my colleagues, some of them are really scared of using digital tools or to change role or to manage groups. It’s difficult to propose collaborative learning we don’t have many devices.(2 per 20 or 25 students). I usually bring my PC but it is not enough.
Thanks to the electronic diary, I can share materials both with my colleagues and students.

When setting up student groups to work on a project, Anna often leaves it up to the students to decide who they would like to work with and what each member’s role should be. However, when it comes to peer assessment Anna prefers to use a random name-picking tool, as she believes this helps ensure objectivity and is more likely to encourage useful and constructive feedback among peers. Do you agree with these different approaches? Anna mentions a variety of digital tools which are helpful in implementing and assessing collaborative work, such as Edmodo, Scrumy, Tackks, Padlets, Google Forms, etc. What are your experiences with these tools?

3.4 Answer
I totally agree with and I really appreciate these different approaches. Anna Laghigna’s video was really inspiring because she described lots of digital tools and methodological tips to use them. At the end of the video you can grasp the importance of designing collaborative learning and assessment, you have no more doubts the point; formative assessment is a process of transformation, that is, teachers have to monitor students’ progress going forward, step by step.
I have never used the digital tools proposed and I am grateful Anna shared with us.
As far as her questions, I think that, to quote her, a coach is not a referee, a coach/teacher should trains students giving them tips, correcting, suggesting possible ways and remedies, helping them to find their learning styles. They are not robots therefore they can be successful or not but they can certainly know if they have improved despite positive or negative evaluations. They are better judges than us.
Students themselves can be helpful in convincing their parents if they tell and explain them the process of transformation, they are sort of ambassadors for assessing for rather than of learning

Dr. Luis Valente suggests self- and peer assessment can help students to move away from seeing teachers as the only source of judgement on the quality of their learning, thereby helping them to become more independent learners. Do you agree, and what are your experiences with this? He also notes that research shows that self-assessment combined with peer assessment reduces the trend of ‘friendship dependency’, ‘benefit of the dominators’ and ‘benefit of parasitism’. Does this match with your experiences? What do you think of assigning a percentage weight to individual assessment as part of the summative assessment related to collaborative work? Any other thoughts on Dr. Valente’s suggestions?

3.6 Answer
Involving students in the definition of the parameters to be considered in the assessment, the teacher engages them in the process of creation and assessment.

Discreet assessment can be used as an approach to assess individual participation and performance within collaborative practice when students are not aware that they are being assessed. However, this can raise ethical issues and even if students do not know when they will be "observed" or assessed, they must know that they could be observed and assessed without advance warning

Self- and peer assessment are too demanding for some students who are likely to prefer a grade given by the teacher. To become independent learners is the outcome of a process and, at the end of it, if students understood that assessing the quality of their learning is too important to become independent learners, it would be the best result.

I totally agree with the evidences of the research and with assigning a percentage weight to individual assessment as part of the summative assessment related to collaborative work. In fact, a summative assessment should consider the role by each students in the group to avoid assertiveness of dominators or idleness.

I found what Dr. Valente suggests very interesting about discreet assessment and especially the solution proposed “they must know that they could be observed and assessed without advance warning”

Do you find it an interesting approach, and is it one you have experience with? Valentina mentions the need for teachers to bring their best skills and practices to the team while remaining flexible to adapt them in case others suggest better ways of working. Do you agree with this, and what are your experiences of acting on the constructive criticisms of other teachers?

I have never had experience of “co-teaching rotation”, a very interesting approach, and I found interesting when she says: ”We became a good team and achieved great results. As a result, our relationship with the children changed - they became more united, started organizing games on their own and helped each other.” Therefore, teachers’ good practices were a good imprinting for children.

I agree with Valentina about sharing practices and showing best practices though it’s not easy finding time to meet colleagues after schools apart from institutional meetings.

Nevertheless, I have experienced collaborative designing lesson plans and though it mainly deals with theory, I can say that the more open minded and willing to accept suggestions you are, the better you are at improving and innovating. Constructive criticism is always necessary to manage the change that is inevitable.

It was easy organizing activities and group video chat but slow connection didn’ t help communication.

Unfortunately, I must admit that many teachers do not realize that, as with any new tool, they can become proficient enough so that it becomes the easiest thing to use it, other fears for pupils’ safety or class management.

Professor Butler says: “(….) we are actually building an effective community of practice – not only among ourselves, but among our students as well” and they really impressed me. Community, like the little village where I work, with its strong sense of belonging, and old people like passing on know-how and traditions, young people share with old people their dreams and new tools.

Being part of an educational community supposedly has the same objective to achieve perhaps through collaborative teaching and learning.

There are many challenges to reach the top: burocracy, lack of time, lack of technical support or digital devices, demotivated students, brilliant lesson plans and projects, but much is only on paper, the reality is completely different. And when I am ready to give up, I can’t but think of the traditional saying “necessity is the mother of invention”. Step by step, those problems who depend on me and my colleagues can be solved, but the will to do things together and to solve problems are not enough. However, when good results come, we say that it was worth trying new strategies, new methodologies together with our students.

I often collaborate across themes relevant to the whole school. We choose cross-cutting topics and key competences, I usually work with teachers of the vocational area. We focus on the students we are going to work with and we ask them if they are interested in those topics and their suggestions. We usually include a school trip at the end of the project which is a way of mutually sharing information and experiences, of assessing key competences, of seeing in action the future citizens striving to achieve their independence.

I agree with Majella Dempsey about skills and conditions needed for teacher to collaborate. I would also add being unlimited patient, tolerant and forwarded-looking.

Unfortunately, the leadership in my current school doesn’t model collaboration with, most of the time, the result of a mere formal repetition of useless meetings with no clear common goals to achieve. I found a true work group when planning with my colleagues of my school which is 30 km from the main Institution. A favourable environment which is involving, even the young teachers get easily involved and since they feel part of a group they are willing to share ideas and new tools. However, there are also sceptical teachers whose refrain is “What? Students? They are not students, they are arms stolen from agriculture” but we must profit of their help in practical activities and of their time and they are happy when the see our students outcomes.

I am still trying to get used to technology as a tool to teaching, but it is impossible to avoid it in collaborating with other teachers. At the beginning , we used it just for sending and displaying. Lately, we have improved in using devices and the internet. Its immediate use helps in solving problems of the last minute. It has been really useful to prepare the step by step path for students with special needs. There is no ready recipe for them so that we focus on them to tailor lessons and tools. Before planning we need to observe and we share impressions and ideas, then each of us makes proposals (obviously we discuss a lot ..... perhaps technology also helps brevity) And in the end, we share with the educationalist or neuropsychiatrist.
I must admit that we usually write mails or we communicate via skype or simply texting or phone calls. However, due to this course a new technological universe is now at hand. I really appreciate Dotstorming

Do you agree that it is challenging to find time for teacher collaboration within a school day? What is your experience with this, and what solutions have you tried to overcome this challenge? Do you agree that working with teachers from different disciplines can be very useful, and what are your relevant experiences? What are the conditions needed for this to work, in your opinion?

I totally agree. It's impossible to find time within schoolday. We usually meet before lessons or after. Most teachers in my school do not live where we work and the only way to collaborate, apart from formal meetings where we mainly share Lesson Plans and almost finished projects, therefore we have to use technologies. I think that, as already said in other posts, a community of practice is composed by teachers willing to share but also to learn from other teachers. I taught English Literature for twenty years and now I have been teaching in a school where Economics and Law studies are the main subjects. Thanks to my colleagues I' ve completely changed approach and strategies. I've learnt and I'm also learning from my students as far as digital tools. On of the most relevant experience in recent years has been our days in Bruxelles at the Parliament. At school, we trained students how to present a legislative proposal at the European Parliament. They had also to compare with the Italian procedure. When we went to the European Parliament and we met some representatives, we felt very proud of them.
Wthat are the conditions? It was like walking in minefield. Problems everywhere that we could solve thanks to creativity, willingness and technology
