Books are viewed as sources of knowledge, power, and differentiation among citizens. "A book is a loaded gun in the house next door. Burn it. Take the shot from the weapon. Breach man's mind. Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?" (Bradbury 58). The government controls the ignorant people by censoring and shunning books, killing anyone who defies because only those who know will have the power to shake the authorities.

According to Montag "I can't talk to the walls because they are yelling at me. I can't talk to my wife; she listens to the walls." (Bradbury 82) Also on the same conversation, Faber states that "It (the televisor) tells you what to think and blasts it in. It must be right. It seems so right. It rushes you on so quickly to its own conclusions your mind hasn't time to protest." (Bradbury 84) These quotes explain that throughout the day, the television is shouting propaganda at you and if you keep hearing the same thing you will eventually start to believe it. That is censorship.

They aren't forced to exercise knowledge, information, or thinking, and instead are given basic facts of what would be common knowledge in our world. The information given to the children are limited to only what they need to know because the less they know, the easier it is to control them.
