Militarism is a belief or desire of a gov or people that a country should maintain a strong military that's prepared to aggressively to defend or promote national interests. The historical significance is that European powers were starting to compete within other militaries causing rising tensions between them. Due to the industrial revolution many countries started to rebuild their militaries revolving around producing weaponry while also recruiting young men/boy into the armed forces. This was a major role within the cause of world war I because it setup competition within power leading to tension among countries alongside militaries that are already prepared for war.

The historical significance is European nations formed secret alliances with members who secretly agreed to protect and help one another when attacked. This shows us why Russia and Germany are ready to jump into the conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Britain & France were allies with Russia they were called the Triple Entente, and of them viewed Germany as a rival from different perspectives. they were joined by Italy, Japan, China, the United States, and other countries. At the of the end of the war there was a total of 27 Allies and Associated Powers. The Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the former Triple Alliance, which was now called the Central Powers contending the forces of France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, and Greece. The role caused a huge war to any allied state that was going to be threaten or attacked by other non allied state.
