Trajan's Column is a big cultural artifact/ monument that was created in 110 AD. This big sculpture was created to commemorate the Roman Empire and their artistic and military achievements under the reign of Emperor Trajan. Rome had a very strong military and was good especially in water. The Romans were so dominant in the water they grew to call the sea "Mare Nostrum" which meant our sea in Latin. The Romans were a very influential with many things they did with art being one of the most memorable. Trajan's Column influenced many artists and sculptures with its spiral frieze design. Overall Ancient Rome's impact on art and history is much greater when compared to Ancient Greece.

Greek City States and Art

Ancient Greece had many famous sculpturers and was known as one of the art meccas in all of history. Some notable sculptors were Phidias, Myron, and Lysippos. All three of these people had their own unique approaches and helped develop the art world into what we know it today. Something that Ancient Greece did and was known for in comparison to Rome was that Greece was set into "polis" or as we know them city-states. These were self governing entities that all made their own decisions but at the same time all made up Ancient Greece. While Rome was all governed by one entity/ emperor. These city-states helped influence the U.S develop its original 13 colonies and eventually into our current 50 states. The most notable city-state is Athens but others like Sparta and Thebes were among the strongest/ most powerful during the Greek reign.

Both Ancient Greece and Rome had many redeeming qualities that have influenced the world for thousands of years now. The Roman empire and its art has inspired artists and sculptors with its amazing and modern architecture. While Greece was far ahead of its time when developing its government, education, and development of city-states. All in all they both are major parts of history and have and will continue to influence us for many more years to come.
