The role of socio-cultural aspects in my teaching scenario is about comprehending the background and context of my students in order to include those life experiences into our classes. I have had students from other cities and cultures, and I consider I did not take advantage of that opportunity to foster meaningful learning processes. However, I am now aware of it and I appreciate and embrace different cultural backgrounds more than ever. Sociocultural aspects in the English class are one of the most valuable things we should consider when planning our lessons. When doing so, our students feel that their identities and biographies matter. Sociocultural differences and similarities enrich our classrooms.

-Geraldine Jiménez Grajales.

By Harrison.

Culture is an important element in society. From the teaching scenario, we can not undermind the impact that culture has not only in learning but also in teaching. Sometimes, teachers tend to focus only on those elements from USA or UK. In that way, we are just leaving the multidiversity that characterizes our country. English is not a superior language, but it is a key in order to explore the world through the language. Even from our own context, the socio-cultural aspect allows us to start exploring cultures without leaving behind our own culture. From meaningful teaching practices, we can include the socio-cultural elements starting from our own culture. It is not easy, but not impossible. The main challenge is to show students the possibility to explore different perspectives and cultural elements through the language.

It plays a very significant role in our context, and we need to take into consideration some of these points due to the incorporation of it being very important and necessary with the ever changing ways of the world, and to also promote respect:

-Cultural relevance: the incorporation of the student’s cultural background, now more than ever with the large group of immigrants that have come to the country and a deep dive into the different cultures that already exist in our context.

-Language development: the role of language in cognitive development. Teachers can manage this by encouraging dialogue, discussion, and language-rich activities in the classroom but not staying only in the surface level, but really encourage cultural knowledge and research.

-Social interaction: It focuses on the importance of collaborative learning and interaction between them, creating a sense of community and shared knowledge among students.

Valentina Medina M.

From my point of view socio-cultural aspects plays a essential rol since this is going to be the bridge that connect us with foreign language. I strongly believe that people usually try to learn a foreign language to interact with foreign people although learners and teacher gives a lot of importance to the grammatical aspect which I will not deny is important but what are we doing with all that rules and structures?? Are we just memorizing or applying it with a purpose?. I actually believe that socio-cultural aspect helps students to dynamize that language, that is, to be aware of elements such as the context, the audience, the tone, the word selection and who those elements enhance my communication process.

Jhonny mesa

The socio-cultural aspect must play an important role in our classes, since we are language teachers and language is full of nothing but culture. It is essential to show our students that English and any other language is diversified and that it is imperative to understand it from different angles in order to communicate appropriately in different contexts and with different people.

Daniela H
