What an awesome day to be in Washington D.C.! I am from Cheyenne, Wyoming where I serve as the K-12 science coordinator for Laramie County School District #1. This is my first year in this role and love where the district is moving in science and technology education. 

As far as a foreign experience that has shaped my world outlook, that would have to be the summer I discovered the power of music to cross cultural barriers. My family and I were traveling through Russia (then the Soviet Union). We were in Siberia. My parents were tired from the long trip and went to bed early. My sister, myself, and some other college students on the tour with us, headed to the bar to play cards (we were forbidden to leave the hotel). We began to play poker and asked the bartender if he would be willing to play some of our music. He agreed. We gave him Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and the bar began to fill up with people from all over the area.  They had never heard the album before (it was brand new at the time and unavailable outside of the US). Needless to say, no one in our group bought a single drink or our meal that night. What started out as a quiet card game ended as a fun filled night of dancing, laughter, and adult beverages! My favorite experience was a 3 week tour of Israel with my husband and two adult sons. My mother- in-law travelled to then Palensitne in the early 1940's so it was exciting to visit the sites she memorialized in photos. She arrived from Marseilles via the same ship as some of Israel's early founders but we never knew the historical importance of what we considered
to be family photos until we shared them with locals.
