Water pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems Penang has been facing. Water pollution happens when toxic substances enters water bodies including lakes, rivers and many more. This degrades the quality of water.

People Throw Rubbish Everywhere

The Penang Government Exco said the pollution problem can be linked to the attitude of the public who continue to throw away rubbish arbitrarily. This happened in many place especially at the beach. It is beause Penang is also known for it's beach.

Believe it or not gold is one of the causes of pollution in Sungai Pinang, which is one of the most polluted rivers in the state. This issue was revealed by Mohamad Nor Hafiz Nor Azmi, the Assistant Director Of Penang Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS). According to him, gold washing and forming industries along the Pinang River are among those identified by JPS as the source of pollution in the river. Gold mining negatively affects the environment through destruction of the ecosystem, depletion of water quality, and loss of vegetation. (Belayneh et al., 2021). It is because there are chemicals used to wash this gold but its beauty 'kills' the river.

Pollutants and chemical substances are also one of the main factors of water pollution. They are produced by many industrial locations, and some lack waste treatment systems. Industrial waste is dumped into freshwater systems such as nearby river and lakes. The chemical substances that seep from this trash have the potential to alter freshwater systems' temperatures, threathening marine life and making the water unhealthy for human consumption.

Do Not Litter !

Please try not to litter at all especially if you live near to a lake, river or the ocean. Even if it's a straw, a paper of gum because every little bits counts. Did you know? There's an issue where there's a straw in turtle's nose and plastics are everywhere in the ocean. This kills more marine lives which can lead to extinction. To solve this issue, many restaurants in Penang take actions by not using and providing plastic straws and plastic bags anymore. They even charge 20 cents or sometimes RM1 if you want to buy plastic bags. People also create awareness by using slogans like #Savetheturtles.

In my personal opinion, I think the Penang government plays a very important role to solve this water pollution issue. The Penang government is urged to be more aggressive in implementing an action plan to deal with the pollution of the river and beach in Penang. Government can reduce buildings and houses near the river or lake. They also should do something to reduce the water the water pollution at Sungai Pinang by not build bildings nearby the lake. They should also sue the parties who contiminate the river. This way the water will not pollute by human activities and the water will be cleaner.

Do not use plastic !

Almost all of the plastic we use ends up in the water because it is so hard to dispose them. If you don't use plastic water bottles, you are actually helping to save the environment even a tiny bit. Instead throwing the plastic bottles everywhere, you can do 5R (Reuse, Recycle, Reject, Reduce, Repair). Even if you were to throw the plastic bottles, you can throw them in recycle bin instead of normal trash bin.

There are a lot of rivers and lakes that has been polluted in Penang, but today i will focus on one of the river that is polluted in Georgetown. This river is called 'Sungai Pinang'.

I hope that the water in Penang will be cleaner in the future. We as a society, we are responsible to take care of our water sources. For example like taking care of the river, lake and beaches. Every little bit counts and each step will help us to improvise the cleanliness of our water source. Last but not least, I hope future generations will continue to sustain the water cleanliness and avoid water contamination as possible. Thank you for reading my padlet ^^
