With many men leaving their jobs to join the military, their empty positions were taken by women. However, after WWII, most women were laid off since men returned. This graph represents the labor supply of different aged women throughout the latter of the 1950s. Older aged women had an increased labor supply demand while younger women had a decreased demand. These young women who worked at the time of the war had grown up, surpassing the title of "young" (which is age 33 and older according to the graph). Thus, these older women had more experience during the war. The younger women in the postwar period (who did not work during the war) were more likely to become laid off from their jobs and businesses wouldn't even hire them. This is because older women were favored by companies due to their experience working in the war. With the younger women age group not being employed and having to stay at home, many turned towards getting married and starting a family. These conditions progressed towards the Baby Boom and the popularity of marriage during the 1950s.
