Tes SEND Show London is on a mission to empower the education workforce through affordable, practical and effective SEND CPD.

The event offers a great opportunity to join colleagues and peers for a day (or two!) of inclusive brilliance, networking, and practical ideas to strengthen inclusive practice in school settings.

Step and Stone is an award-winning Bristol based bakery, working with adults with learning disabilities to help them learn skills for work and then supporting them into a job if that’s what they want.

Set up by people with lived experience, they noticed that existing careers information on the whole wasn’t very well differentiated, so with support from the National Lottery Community Fund, they have produced three short accessible films, featuring careers in hospitality, retail and working with children. The intention is for the films (and supporting material) to be informative and uplifting.

There are several stories written by disabled apprentices about their own experiences and the challenges they have faced. As well as taking advantage of the support on offer, the apprentices talk about the importance of their own creativity, perseverance and motivation.

Over the three days, young people will:

• Work on a project and deliver a final presentation

• Hear from six members of Axis CLC staff, including Divisional Managers, Resident Liaison Officers, and Trainee Quantity Surveyors, sharing their career journeys and experiences

Their Emerging Talent Programme offers paid opportunities designed to support individuals from underrepresented groups in the heritage sector, including disabled people. With hybrid roles available across a range of locations in England, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience while contributing to the preservation of local heritage.

Whether you’re starting out or looking to build your experience, this programme provides a meaningful way to develop your skills and make a real impact.

It offers practical tools including an easy-to-use CV builder, cover letter support, and workshops on topics like requesting workplace adjustments and self-advocacy.

The challenge for the day was focussed on addressing food waste and food poverty. The creativity and insight shown by the students was impressive, with many of the teams considering what could be achieved by lobbying for legal solutions, by improving education and awareness, and by incentivising behaviour changes. Lots of ideas for apps!
I had the privilege of judging the final pitches, which was a tough decision given the breadth and quality of ideas presented, and the range of presentations. Well done to the winning team from King.
It’s always inspiring to step away from your usual work environment and spend time with young people. I think that coming from outside, you bring a different perspective to their learning while supporting the teaching staff, who are doing a fantastic job. Do get involved with your local school, if you can!

The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) offers the chance to start a rewarding career with Thames Valley Police while earning a salary and studying towards a fully funded degree.
